Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program. Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (major sports). The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field. Reports To

The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals. Supervises

In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal. Job Goal

To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. The coach should also instruct and demonstrate behaviors leading to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes. Upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation. General

The success of athletic programs influences the community’s image. Public exposure carries responsibility; winning is important but not at the expense of good sportsmanship and mental health. The position includes unusual aspects such as extended time, risk of injury, and due process predicaments. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment. Duties And Responsibilities

Has thorough knowledge of athletic policies approved by the Plainwell Community Schools' Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation by the entire staff of the sports program. Knows existing system, state and league regulations; implements and interprets them for staff. Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers requests or grievances through proper channels; aware of meetings requiring attendance. Staff Responsibilities

Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff. Designs conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program. Trains and informs staff, encouraging professional growth and clinic attendance according to local clinic policy. Delegates duties, supervises implementation and analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants at season’s end. Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation. Performs other duties as assigned by the athletic director/principal. Administrative Duties

Assists the athletic director in scheduling, transportation and requirements for tournaments and special sport events. Assists in preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to facility times; coordinates with maintenance and school employees. Provides documentation for state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility. Provides safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites; advises the athletic director and recommends policy or procedural changes. Student Responsibilities

Serves as a mentor to each athlete to promote character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Monitors student athletes’ grades and conduct; provides guidance and safeguards during practices, games and travel. Implements training rules and unique sport regulations; initiates programs concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies; completes injury paperwork within 24 hours. Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians; determines discipline and communicates with parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible. Assists athletes in college or postsecondary planning. Finance And Equipment

Participates in budgeting with the athletic director; establishes equipment requirements for the next season and recommends guidelines for equipment. Operates within budget; accounts for all equipment and handles lost or unreturned items. Arranges issuing, storing and reconditioning of equipment; submits annual inventory and current records. Marks and identifies all equipment; monitors equipment rooms and limits access to authorized personnel; ensures facility cleanliness and safe use of equipment. Maintains secure building access and secures doors, lights, windows and locks when leaving if custodians are not on duty; teaches athletes to respect equipment and property. Public Relations

Organizes preseason meetings for parents, coaches, players and guests. Promotes the sport within and outside the school, including engaging non-participants and coordinating with media and community programs. Maintains quality and accuracy of any releases to local media and maintains good public relations with media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers and fans.
