Overview

The Madison County Sheriff's Office is seeking Entry‑Level Deputy Sheriff positions for individuals who are not currently certified by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) but who are looking to begin a career in law enforcement. Selected candidates will be hired as Deputy Sheriffs and must successfully complete the APOSTC Academy to obtain full certification. All costs for academy attendance are covered by the agency. Upon certification, deputies will assume full law enforcement duties and responsibilities. This position is ideal for individuals who have the desire, integrity, and commitment to serve and protect the citizens of Madison County. Responsibilities

Attend and successfully complete the APOSTC Law Enforcement Academy. Undergo field training following academy graduation. Learn and perform routine patrol duties to prevent and detect criminal activity. Operate patrol vehicles in an assigned geographical area. Monitor and observe vehicular traffic, detect traffic offenses and issue traffic citations as warranted. Observe businesses and residences for criminal activity; check buildings for unauthorized entry and investigate suspicious persons and events. Respond to robberies, thefts, burglaries, homicides, etc. Administer first‑aid to injured, secure crime scenes, conduct interviews with complainants, victims, witnesses and suspects, and gather material evidence. Respond to domestic disturbances, calm overly excited or agitated persons, and physically restrain unruly individuals. Conduct interviews with complainants and witnesses; obtain relevant facts and mediate and resolve complaints and disputes. Make arrests, search vehicles and persons under arrest for weapons and contraband, and transport arrested individuals to our detention facility. Complete paperwork to incarcerate arrestees. Assemble and prepare documentation and narrative reports, memorandums, activity reports. Maintain issued equipment, materials, and supplies required to support daily operations. Assist stranded motorists, direct traffic, transport prisoners, and escort funerals. Enforce court orders; serve summons, subpoenas, eviction orders and execute arrest warrants when required. Provide sworn testimony in court proceedings. Operate computer terminals (MDTs, laptops & desktops) to retrieve information and data. Other duties or tasks may be assigned as needed. Qualifications

High school diploma, GED, or an associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. Must successfully complete the Basic Ability Test (BAT) unless an associate’s degree or higher is held. Must pass a written test, background check, psychological examination, drug screening, physical examination, and CVSA. Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of academy graduation, a U.S. Citizen or naturalized, and have a valid driver’s license and be insurable under Madison County’s risk policy. Must successfully complete the APOSTC Academy and field training. Must be physically fit to perform law enforcement duties, lift 150 lbs, and support the use of firearms, defensive tactics and chemical agents. Must demonstrate knowledge of modern law enforcement principles and practices, applicable laws, first aid, oral and written instructions, and the ability to work calmly under stressful situations. Must be willing to undergo extensive training, including firearms, defensive tactics, legal procedures, and chemical agent use. Equal Employment Opportunity Statement
