Medical Scientist III – Department of Medicine, Institute for Therapeutic Innovation. This is a full-time staff position located in Orlando, FL. Responsibilities
Participate in therapeutic experiments using antibiotics or other compounds and be available for variable therapeutic dosing schedules. Perform all work with viable select biological agents in a BSL-3 biocontainment suite(s) and adhere to biosafety and biosecurity protocols. Conduct laboratory tests/experiments in the BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories following established procedures or protocols; perform studies using Good Laboratory Practices (GLP); assist with generation of SOPs and reports meeting GLP standards. Harvest, purification and storage of bacterial cells and spores; prepare sterile solutions for microbial assays; use spectrophotometer and ultracentrifugation. Determine viability and purity of infectious agent suspensions; perform ELISA and toxin neutralization assays on animal sera. Prepare, clean and sterilize glassware and instruments; maintain general laboratory housekeeping and animal husbandry; troubleshoot equipment and experimental setups. Assist in design and preparation of models (including animal, minimum inhibitory concentration and hollow fiber infection studies); involve inoculations and drug therapy procedures as appropriate. Administer bacteria and therapeutics via nasal passages, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, intramuscular injections and oral gavage; assist in training on BSL-2/BSL-3 techniques including necropsies and tissue processing. Monitor inventory levels, record orders, and maintain accountability records. Perform cell labeling and cell sorting; prepare DNA/RNA, PCR and analysis of samples; utilize computer systems for ordering, data processing, analysis and storage. Comply with GLP requirements/documentation for specific projects; carry out animal husbandry duties and general cleaning; autoclaving and waste removal responsibilities. Present data at weekly meetings; be willing to accept additional roles and responsibilities; meet schedules and deadlines as directed by supervisory personnel. Compliance and Safety
Assist with IACUC and BSL-2/3 safety inspections and maintain operational status on a weekly, monthly, bi-annual and annual basis. Maintain regulatory records of laboratory operations; prepare laboratory and vivarium for inspections and audits; ensure an operational and safe environment. Complete required annual trainings, SOP reviews, and maintain inventory and data management in compliance; support animal husbandry duties and related activities. Keep the Laboratory Manager informed of issues related to practices, equipment, training, supplies and records; complete Shipping/Transportation and Export Control training as required. General Supervision and Management
Provide input into process development/improvement based on observations and literature reviews. Assist with inventory management, ordering; arrange maintenance for decontamination of BSL-3 equipment; help gather, organize and validate data for manuscripts and reports. Assist with CO2 tank and laundry deliveries; flexibility to be on-call within 20 minutes of the building; minimal travel to the main campus (~1 year on average) and travel as needed for conferences. Salary
$60,000 - $70,000 Annually Qualifications
Required: Doctoral degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology or a closely related field and two years of relevant experience; or a master’s degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology, or a closely related field and five years of relevant experience; or a bachelor’s degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology, or a closely related field and seven years of relevant experience. Preferred
Three years of experience in BSL-3 containment suite supervision; ALAAS certification; animal husbandry and BSL-2 experience. Experience mentoring in a BSL-3 work environment with vertebrate animals; strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Special Instructions to Applicants
