Overview The Mission Systems Environmental Effects Engineering team at Collins Aerospace is looking for a Senior EMC/EMI Electrical Engineer to join our staff. This position will be responsible to support the dynamic day to day pre-qualification and qualification testing for products and sub-systems of moderate to high complexity. This position is part of a larger team that performs a variety of TEMPEST, Nuclear, Electromagnetic Compatibility/Interference (EMC/EMI) and Power Input qualification testing of Company products and programs to various military and commercial industry standards. The Environmental Effects Engineering (EEE) lab is a world-class, full-service, 18,000 sqft (and growing) Environmental Qualification Test Lab located in Cedar Rapids, IA capable of creating nearly any environment required in the avionics industry. While EEE reports up through Mission Systems, they support all testing for Collins Aerospace and Raytheon Technologies as needed. EEE services not only include a full suite of Climatics, Dynamic, EMI, EMC, Lightning, and TEMPEST test capabilities; their industry experts also offer design support, analysis, test failure troubleshooting, root cause analyses, and much more.

In this role, you will be a key contributor working with a team of experienced Electromagnetic Compatibility/Interference (EMC/EMI) engineers to perform EMC/EMI and Power Input qualification testing of Company products and programs for various military and commercial industry standards; particularly MIL-STD-461 and DO-160. You will advise design engineers on EMC aspects affecting their program. You will lead all pre-testing activities for assigned projects including the preparation of test plans and procedures. During test events, you will ensure correct set-up and equipment usage for the various tests and ensure correct and appropriate data is collected. You will collaborate with a cross-functional team to produce and release a complete test report.

Beyond technical duties, you will utilize strong communication skills to support production services, communicate technical results, present findings to customers and mid-level managers, and coordinate with departments such as Business Development, Finance, and Operations. This position requires you to independently handle multiple projects and tasks.

What You Will Do

Serve assigned projects as a focal point for all EMI test activities including:

Contribute to engineering program pursuits and bid estimates

Requirements capture activities (Review, parse, and translate EMI and power input requirements)

Documentation support for each assigned project including

Preparation and review of test plans, procedures, and reports

Generate repeatable test procedures and physical test setups with test equipment and appropriate data recording using a variety of military and commercial industry standards

Coordination and scheduling of in-house test activities and assisting outsourcing of testing as necessary

Validation of all laboratory test setups and methods to ensure compliance with test procedures and applicable standards

Interface with project engineers, as necessary, to support program qualification activities

Generate Qualification by Similarity (QBS) analyses

Assist project engineers with gathering, setting up, and collecting data for ad-hoc EMI evaluations outside of the test lab

Provide general laboratory support

Deploy, implement, and troubleshoot test and support equipment and software.

Generate and verify requirement documentation for laboratory developed software

Conduct root-cause-analysis and technical investigations for software/hardware designs

Train and assist test technicians to navigate and use laboratory developed tools; test procedures, test methods, and data recording instructions; and troubleshoot EMI and power input test setups

Identify improvement areas; research and submit equipment requests for future test equipment needs

Collaborate with Calibration services

On-site calibration services to ensure test equipment is being calibrated in a timely fashion with tabular data

Communicate with external calibration houses regarding required calibration methodology, and submit repair requests

Collaborate with Procurement/Acquisition services

Identify upcoming projects with testing requirements that exceed current test equipment capabilities; work with procurement to rent test equipment, and deploy rental test equipment within contracted rental time

Identify and submit purchase requests for consumable laboratory items such as RF connectors, RF cables, power connectors, and various current carrying cables sized appropriately

Maintain and share a capital plan with engineers and identify compromises with shared resources for test equipment

Qualifications You Must Have

Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience

Circuit board design experience including experience with schematic capture tools and supervision and guidance to PCB layout board designers

Working knowledge of EM/circuit simulation tools

Qualifications We Prefer

Be capable of hands-on troubleshooting using engineering lab equipment (oscilloscopes, signal generators, etc…)

Experience with military aerospace testing standards is desired (DO-160; MIL-STD-461; MIL-STD-704)

Experience in some or all aspects of RF hardware development life cycle including requirements capture and verification, design and development, sub-level and system level integration and testing

Be willing to pursue/obtain iNARTE certification

Possess excellent communication skills, including the ability to write technical material and present to customers and mid-level managers

Be self-directed, able to meet cost, schedule, and performance objectives with minimal oversight

Active DoD Secret Clearance preferred

Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance employees, as they are essential to the development of our products.

The salary range for this role is 82,000 USD - 164,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
