Overview
OUC — The Reliable One is seeking a Senior Project Engineer - Substation/Transmission Project Management to join the Trans, Substation & Sys Protect division. The role focuses on leading electric substation and transmission capital improvement projects to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective service. The ideal candidate will oversee the full project lifecycle, coordinate engineering consultants, manage project contracts, secure resources, review design specifications for compliance with OUC standards, and represent OUC in negotiations with consultants, contractors, governmental agencies, and other stakeholders. Responsibilities
Coordinate and manage activities of engineering consultants and administer contracts to ensure compliance with terms and conditions. Review engineering consultants' transmission and substation project design specifications for compliance with OUC standards and desired outcomes. Coordinate acquisition of resources needed to complete projects, including property rights, permits, materials, consultants, and contractors. Recommend new and updated engineering design standards, practices, procedures, methods, and material specifications to promote a safe, reliable, and cost-effective system. Recommend policy-level and procedural changes to improve design and operation of the system. Represent and negotiate OUC interests with consultants, vendors, contractors, developers, utilities, governmental agencies, and industry working groups. Attend seminars and advanced technical training as needed and available. Guide and train other personnel on specific projects and programs as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in electric utility transmission/substation design engineering, project management, construction management, or operations. Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field from an ABET-accredited program. Valid driver’s license and ability to attend site visits and external meetings. Registration as a Professional Engineer (preferred) and advanced certification in Power Systems (preferred). Proficiency with project planning and execution, including permitting, financial management, design review, and contractor coordination. Experience with project management tools and Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with AutoCAD, PLS CAD, and Primavera is a plus. Strong analytical, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills with ability to influence project direction and coordinate multidisciplinary teams. Effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence outcomes across internal teams, vendors, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
Technical Requirements
Working knowledge of power plant operations, real-time transmission system operations, system protection, and transmission equipment and applications. Familiarity with environmental permitting processes in Central Florida and substation layout analysis. Knowledge of electrical maps, schematics, and construction standards for transmission and substations. Experience with financial concepts, budgeting, project cash flow, and related software (Microsoft Office, Project, AutoCAD, PLS CAD, Primavera). Understanding of National Electric Safety Code and standard operating procedures. Strong communication, negotiation, and analytical skills; adaptable in evolving work environments; eagerness to learn and train others. Education/Certification/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in engineering; minimum eight years in relevant fields; PE registration preferred; valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
This role may involve exposure to outdoor conditions, risk of electrical hazards, confined spaces, wet/humid environments, standing, walking, sitting, bending, lifting up to 40 pounds, speaking/hearing, typing, and driving a company vehicle.
