Direct Jobs
Overview
The Humane Society of Wicomico County is an open admission shelter located 30 minutes from the Ocean City, Maryland area. We are looking for a full-time veterinarian to join our team. We have a busy hospital clinic where we do all in-house animals and outside surgery for the public. Most surgery is general spay/neuter, but there are opportunities to perform more extensive surgeries such as eye enucleations, C-sections, leg amputations, pyometra, entropion repairs, and mass removals. We also provide more extensive procedures for shelter animals as needed. All shelter animals are spayed/neutered and given a general veterinary exam before adoption, with some follow-up on recently adopted animals. Our shelter is fundraising for a new facility, a state-of-the-art 14,000 square foot building.
Compensation Salary between $125,000-$150,000 based on experience. We could discuss the ability to be a contracted employee. Pay would be $90 per hour or per animal surgery pay, whichever is greater. This position is scheduled Tuesday–Friday and two Saturdays per month.
Team You will be assisted by an amazing vet assistant/tech team and a team of trained clinic volunteers.
Responsibilities
Perform routine spay/neuter surgeries on both public and shelter animals.
Perform the occasional mass removal, enucleation, amputation, pyometra, and other surgeries that the surgeon is comfortable with on shelter animals or for the public. All specialty surgeries are approved by the veterinarian and based on their comfort level and equipment available.
Work with back-of-house assistants/techs on developing your own personal protocols to start initial treatments.
Examine shelter animals (mostly dogs and cats but other species are seen) and recommend treatment plans.
Examinations for animal abuse cases and court appearances when needed.
Perform vaccine clinics for the public at the shelter’s discretion, typically once per month.
Wellness checks for the public are at the discretion of the veterinarian. Public interaction is as much or as little as you desire.
Document and balance drug log books.
Oversee general clinic assistants' schedule.
Work directly with the staff and director on euthanasia decisions. (We do not promote a "no kill" status but do track "no kill" statistics.)
Qualifications Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, a valid state license, and strong medical and surgical skills for high-volume sterilization, diagnostics, and disease management. Essential non-medical requirements include excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work under pressure and with diverse populations, compassion for animals, and a commitment to animal welfare principles. Must work directly as a team with the staff and shelter director.
Benefits Benefits: 2 weeks vacation, health insurance, dental insurance, eye care, personal days, sick days, CE class time credit.
Equal Opportunity EEO statement: We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity in our workforce.
