Overview
The Prototype Fabrication (PF) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory provides decades of experience in machining, fabrication and precision dimensional inspection of critical hardware to support the nation's stockpile stewardship efforts. The successful applicant will join the Prototype Fabrication Applied Metrology group (PF-AM), joining a dedicated staff of engineers, programmers, journeyman machinists, dimensional inspectors, and quality assurance professionals to ensure manufactured components meet drawing standards and requirements. Participate in design for manufacturability reviews to ensure dimensional inspection requirements are understood and achievable. Validate, interpret, statistically analyze, and communicate high fidelity inspection data to customers. Identify the need of inspection fixtures and facilitate the design, creation, and assembly of the fixture. Develop inspection processes. Research new inspection techniques and platforms applicable to meet customer needs. Lead models-based inspection in support of NNSA's Models-Based Enterprise Initiative. Position Details
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. R&D Engineer 1 ($94,500 - $154,600) R&D Engineer 2 ($104,100 - $172,200) Minimum Job Requirements
Working knowledge of implementation and compliance with Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Operations, Quality and Safety Management programs. Knowledge of the manufacturing industry. Demonstrated experience designing, planning, and executing projects. Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), sufficient to provide consultation on manufacturability and dimensional inspection capabilities for a product in the design phase, as well as conceptual prototypes. Strong writing ability and verbal communication skills required to independently prepare and present data and reports to peers, senior colleagues, management, and customers. Effective time management skills required to manage multiple tasks with varying priorities and deadlines. Working knowledge of Open Setup Metrology techniques such as: Optical Comparator, Height Gauge, Micrometers, Indicators, Hard Gauges, Surface Roughness, Gauge Block/Pins, etc. Higher-Level Qualifications: Experience with ultra-high precision Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs). Hands-on experience programming, error mapping, calibrating, and/or repairing CMMs to sub-micron uncertainties. Demonstrated experience designing, planning, and executing projects associated with dimensional inspection (e.g. CMMs, optical measurement techniques, surface analyzers, and open setup). Education/Experience (Level 1):
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution related to the occupation combined with 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience directly related to the occupation. Education/Experience (Level 2):
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications
Working knowledge of various metrology software and/or post processing packages. Quindos experience is highly desired. (e.g. Quindos, Calypso, PC-DMIS, and/or Polyworks). Working knowledge of collecting ISO 10360 calibration data, observing trends required for equipment monitoring and preventative maintenance. Knowledge of creating and correcting CMM error maps. Working knowledge of manufacturing software. Creo and SolidWorks experience is highly desired. (e.g. Creo, SolidWorks, NX, Catia, Inventor, etc.). The technical ability to directly assist dimensional inspectors in troubleshooting a part program or equipment failure in the event of a problem. Note to Applicants
