Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated, self-driven Packaging R&D Engineer 1/2 to join the Nuclear Materials and TRU Waste Shipping Group (NPI-7). NPI-7 ensures safe, efficient and compliant management of all radioactive and hazardous material generated at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building, the TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), the Transuranic Waste Facility (TWF), and the Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB). The group also manages nuclear material shipments and provides other support to these facilities, including safeguards support. R&D Engineer 1 ($94,500-$154,600) As an R&D Engineer 1 you will be working with other engineers/researchers, technicians, DOE personnel, and other DOE sites to evaluate radioactive materials, evaluate tooling and equipment, and determine packaging requirements for NPI-7. You will have the opportunity to help develop and implement new packaging processes to provide solutions for future shipping needs at the LANL Plutonium Facility. R&D Engineer 2 ($104,100-$172,200) In addition to what is outlined at the lower level, at this level, the R&D Engineer 2 will assist in the development of technical products such as procedures and reports, and the development of intellectual property. You will set direction and goals for well-defined tasks involving more than one person. Scopes tasks within a project and defines deliverables at task level. Leads specific project tasks to meet scope, schedule and budget. What You Need Minimum Job Requirements Professional Level Experience : Working knowledge in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: electrical, mechanical, nuclear or another R&D engineering field. Nuclear Experience : Demonstrated knowledge of underlying principles related to radioactive decay processes, interaction of radiation and matter, and radiation protection. Integrated Safety Management : Demonstrated knowledge of the process for integrating safety into work practices by addressing all types of hazards to ensure safety for workers, the public, and the environment. Interpersonal Skills : Strong skills and initiative in organization, planning, teamwork, customer interactions, and interpersonal communications. Job Performance : Demonstrated ability to work productively on multiple tasks with minimal supervision. Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 1 level : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution related to the occupation combined with 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience directly related to the occupation. Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 2 Documentation of Work : Demonstrated ability to develop technical products such as technical procedures and reports. Compliance : Demonstrated experience in conducting engineering work while complying with ES&H requirements and using appropriate administrative controls, engineering controls, and personal protective equipment and while following conduct of operations principles. Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2 level : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications Type A and Type B Shipping Containers : Demonstrated work experience with packing and unpacking shipping containers used for transportation of radioactive materials. Leak Test Equipment : Demonstrated understanding of leak test methods and experience working with leak test equipment. Engineering Design : Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software and production of detailed mechanical drawings.
