Fish & Wildlife Biologist - Georgia Power Growth & Natural Resources
Please note: You will be required to be in the office or onsite at a work location a minimum of four (4) days per week and/or as additionally required.
This position will require DOT certification to tow trailers and other loads greater than 10,001 lbs.

Job Summary This position will serve as part of the Cultural and Biological Resources Team within the Growth and Natural Resources group in Georgia Power's Environmental Affairs department. Desired applicants will be experienced in species and habitat management practices and techniques. The successful applicant will provide technical support on issues related to biological resources to a broad range of Georgia Power's business units across the state of Georgia, including Generation, Power Delivery, and Land. Coordination and consultation with state and federal resource agencies on regulated portions of company operations will be a major component of this job, as will interactions with internal customers, consultants, and other external stakeholders. Job Requirements Education Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Fisheries and/or Wildlife Biology, general Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, and related fields. Advanced degree a plus. Other degrees will be considered in combination with experience. Experience Combination of experience from the following list: Conservation and management of fish, wildlife, or plant populations at or adjacent to industrial facilities
Management of fish, wildlife, or plant populations on behalf of federal, state, or local regulatory agencies
Management of wildlife damage to human-built facilities and prevention of safety risks from wildlife interactions
Use of job-specific vehicles, including boats, hauling/trailers, all-terrain vehicles, etc.
Safe use of specialized sampling equipment (e.g. mist nets, electrofishers, etc.)
Interactions with public recreation resources, including reservoirs, wildlife management areas, aquatic vegetation, and parks
Research experience in or with academic institutions on fish and wildlife populations and individuals
Knowledge Knowledge of local populations of flora and fauna across Georgia ecoregions, including an understanding of habitat needs for various species
Working knowledge of the conservation and protection of rare, threatened, and endangered (RTE) species, particularly those identified as Species of Greatest Conservation Need
Strong conceptual knowledge of the regulatory framework guiding the management of fish and wildlife populations, e.g. Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Clean Water Act, O.C.G.A Title 27
Working understanding of the electric power industry is a plus
Skills Strong written communication skills, including the ability to transmit highly technical information to nontechnical audiences or those of differing technical backgrounds
Strong verbal communication skills, both internal and external to employer
Strategic thinking related to complex issues that may require analysis of regulatory requirements and operational details
Ability to adapt to a flexible work environment, including night and weekend emergencies as needed
Ability to work safely outdoors in non-office environments and variable weather conditions

Job Responsibilities The successful candidate will work as part of a small team of biologists. Current Georgia Power policy requires this position to be on-site at the employee's office location or at a company or customer facility four days per week, with one day per week as a telecommuting day, subject to work needs. While exact responsibilities will be dependent on the new hire's specialized experience relative to the remainder of the team, the following are expected to be potential major job duties: Serve as the point of contact for the Growth and Natural Resources Team to Georgia Power's Lake Resource Offices at company hydropower projects, including management of aquatic plants, water quality, wildlife aspects of shoreline permitting, etc.
Subject matter support for FERC hydropower licensing project teams
Support of Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing and compliance studies
Biological issues support for company growth strategy, including new transmission, distribution, and generation
External relationship management with relevant regulatory agencies, professional societies, educational institutions, and natural resources non-governmental organizations
Scientific and general interest presentations on behalf of the company, specifically regarding natural resources management
Field support for company Biologists, Cultural Resources Specialists, and Natural Resources Permitting team as needed
Support of company storm restoration efforts following large storm events
This position has been identified as a role that will require the use of a Georgia Power fleet vehicle
& will require DOT certification to tow trailers & other loads greater than 10,001 lbs.
The following will be required if you are selected for this position: Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience (Must hold a valid driver’s license for the class vehicle to be operated. Driving permits are not typically considered a valid driver’s license).
Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application.
Must consent to a continuous monitoring of your Motor Vehicle Record
