The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and is directly supervised by the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor for the Air Conditioning shop.

Responsibilities
- Fabricate duct work from sheet metal for modifications, installation or repair of air conditioning duct systems.
- Install and maintain HVAC equipment and components such as ultra‑low freezers, centrifuges, refrigerated incubators, tubing, valves, fittings, and casting.
- Plan, prepare, design, and install HVAC, refrigeration, and exhaust systems.
- Interpret sketches, diagrams, blueprints, electrical schematics, formulas, and programming for a building automation operation system.
- Plan, design, install, repair, and troubleshoot HVAC and refrigeration equipment and exhaust systems.
- Maintain current inventory of parts, hardware, refrigerant, and other products; notify supervisor when reordering is needed.
- Use schematics, blueprints, sketches, technical manuals, oral and written instructions while conforming to safe efficient working practices.
- Complete work assignments made through written and oral instructions, work orders, and preventive maintenance print‑out schedules.
- Assemble or install equipment such as evaporators, condensers, receivers, expansion valves, dryers, etc. per manufacturer's specifications.
- Make mechanical repairs to pumps, compressors, chillers, receivers, and evaporators; install and fit connecting rods, crankshafts, rings, bearings, and bushings.
- Use precision tools and equipment such as volt‑ohm meters, amp meters, halide and electronic leak detectors, calibration equipment and other test equipment used in the refrigeration trade.
- Calibrate and set up transmitters, thermostats, and other pneumatic electric controls.
- Charge systems with proper refrigerants to obtain optimum operating temperatures.
- Use charging gauges and charging cylinders to maintain HVAC equipment.
- Rclaim and dispose of all types of refrigerant properly.
- Apply principles of air conditioning and refrigeration such as the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws, and use of refrigerant tables.
- Perform bench performance checks and calibrations to assure each control segment will operate as installed or with minimal readjustment.
- Use vacuum pumps, halide torches, or electronic leak detectors to troubleshoot and repair equipment.
Conditions of Employment

Experience: Evidence of sufficient training or experience in HVAC, refrigeration, and mechanical repair is required. Candidates will be rated according to the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
