Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic
Department: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs – VHA New York Harbor Healthcare System – Facility Maintenance Service – St. Albans CLC Campus
Overview
The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic – Supervisor leads a team of AC Mechanics, manages maintenance and repair of HVAC and refrigeration equipment across the Medical Center and Community Living Center. The role schedules repairs, performs preventive maintenance, oversees safety compliance and collaborates with the Maintenance and Repair Section Chief.
Responsibilities
- Supervise AC Shop operations, designate assignments to subordinates and coordinate daily maintenance activities.
- Diagnose, plan, execute major work orders on HVAC systems ranging from 1/4‑ton to 3,000‑ton capacities and ¼‑to‑2 HP compressors.
- Maintain, repair and rebuild components of compressors, condensers, evaporators, chillers, fans, motor drives and control devices.
- Track preventive maintenance metrics such as completion rates, turnaround time and documentation standards.
- Enforce safety and fire prevention program; conduct routine equipment checks for unsafe conditions.
- Interpret building plans, blueprints, schematics and technical manuals for installation, modernization and repair projects.
- Collaborate with engineering and service sections to manage new construction, expansions and modernization projects.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizen; Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959; background/security investigation; pre‑employment physical.
- EPA approved CFC Universal Certification (Universal). Driver's license abstract required.
- Shift: 8:00 am‑4:30 pm (Full‑time).
- Scheduled continuous announcement until December 30 2025; applications remain on file until that date.
Qualifications
- Experience as a journeyman air conditioning equipment mechanic – proven ability to install, troubleshoot and perform preventive maintenance on complex HVAC and refrigeration systems.
- Evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality; detailed resume descriptions required for evaluation.
- Knowledge of blueprint reading, technical practices, troubleshooting, lead or supervise functions and materials handling.
- Proficiency with work‑order systems, metrics tracking and adherence to service standards.
