Waste Handling Instructor

Required: Associate degree in a related field with three years of experience in waste handling, nuclear operations, or industrial training.

Preferred: Bachelor degree in a related field and one year of relevant experience. Familiarity with DOE O 426.2 and experience in instructional design and adult learning principles.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience as approved by the Human Resources Department.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Level: Nine (9)

Purpose & Scope: SENMC is seeking a qualified Waste Handling Instructor to support the safe and compliant handling of transuranic (TRU) waste. This role is essential to maintaining operational excellence and regulatory compliance through structured training programs aligned with DOE Order 426.2.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Deliver classroom and on-the-job training (OJT) for waste handling procedures.
  • Develop and maintain training materials using Adult Learning Principles.
  • Evaluate trainee performance using approved Performance Measures.
  • Ensure personnel demonstrate proficiency.
  • Maintain accurate training records and documentation.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and technical staff to update training programs.
  • Support continuing training and requalification efforts.
  • Regularly assess the effectiveness of training programs through participant feedback, knowledge checks, and performance metrics, and recommend or implement improvements to enhance learning outcomes and compliance.
  • Support internal and external audits by verifying that all site personnel and contractors meet required training standards before accessing controlled areas and promptly address any identified gaps or deficiencies.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure content relevance.
  • Other duties as assigned in response to a rapidly changing environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively teach technical content in both classroom and field environments.
  • Skilled in designing and updating training.
  • Proficient in conducting performance evaluations and administering written/practical exams.
  • Understanding of DOE orders, nuclear safety, and TRU waste handling protocols.
  • Accurate documentation of training completion and qualification status.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for engaging diverse audiences.
  • Ability to create clear, accurate training documentation and procedures.
  • Works well with subject matter experts, operations staff, and training teams.
  • Ensures accuracy in training records, qualification tracking, and compliance documentation.
  • Excellent communication skills: keen appreciation for follow up, follow through, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Punctual and dependable.
