Legal Secretary I – Sacramento County, CA

Role Overview: The Legal Secretary I functions as a junior clerical professional responsible for composing, typing, and processing legal documents and correspondence, as well as maintaining case records. This position is repetitive and requires minimal supervision after learning office procedures. Some positions in this class must also be able to take and transcribe oral dictation.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Purpose, format, and processing procedures of basic legal forms and documents
  • English grammar, punctuation, spelling, and usage
  • Format and composition of routine correspondence and legal documents
  • Legal terminology, spelling, and usage
  • Basic references for legal clerical work
  • Legal and general office clerical practices and procedures

Minimum Qualifications

  • Either:
    • One year of clerical experience involving the preparation and processing of legal documents for court actions such as those described in the Examples of Duties. Education or training from an accredited college, business school, or training school directly related to the Knowledge and Abilities may be substituted for up to six months of the required experience (15 semester units or 22 quarter units).
    • Or completion of a curriculum approved by the Department of Personnel Services in legal assisting, legal secretarial, or legal stenographic work.
  • Note: Experience referenced means full-time paid experience unless volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be pro‑rated to meet the total experience requirements.
  • Note: If the minimum qualifications include an educational or certificate/license requirement, applicants must submit proof of requirements with the application. Failure to submit proof of requirements may result in disqualification from the examination. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

Special Requirements

  • All positions in this class require the ability to type from clear copy at a rate of 50 net words per minute.
  • Some positions may require taking oral dictation involving legal terminology. Eligibility for a short‑hand‑required position requires the ability to take oral dictation using any speedwriting method at a rate of 100 words per minute and transcribe at a rate of 30 net words per minute.

Probationary Period

The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.
