Job Summary Work in a challenging but rewarding environment with like‑minded, mission‑oriented team members. The candidate must possess strong clinical and communication skills, be highly accountable, and provide high‑quality care for individuals housed in the Harris County Jail. Duties include intake health assessments, managing urgent care issues, identifying and treating chronic illnesses, and collaborating with advanced practice practitioners, sheriff deputies, nursing staff, and on‑site services such as radiology, pharmacy, nutrition, dental, and laboratory. May require communication with Harris Health Transfer Center or other local hospitals for higher‑level care. Ensure organizational compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Responsibilities

Provide high‑quality care to incarcerated patients.

Perform intake health assessments.

Manage urgent care issues.

Identify and treat chronic diseases.

Collaborate with advanced practice practitioners, deputies, nursing staff, and on‑site services.

Coordinate care with Harris Health Transfer Center or local hospitals as needed.

Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Degrees and Credentials Doctor of Medicine – Board Certified or board‑eligible in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine. Must become board certified before board eligibility period expires and meet all credentialing criteria set by the Medical Executive Committee.

Licensure

Active Texas Medical Board license (MD or DO).

Active DEA license.

Work Experience Completion of an ACGME‑accredited 3‑year or 4‑year residency program in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine.

Communication Skills

Above average verbal communication (heavy public contact).

Exceptional public speaking.

Writing and correspondence – ability to produce reports.

Proficiencies

Computer skills.

Suturing.

Splinting.

EKG interpretation.

Work Schedule Flexible.

Other Requirements Report to Medical Director. No supervisory responsibilities.

Leave must be submitted 60 days in advance for scheduling. CME required: five business days per year.
