Role Overview The hospital veterinarians live and breathe quality – in the pets they treat and the people they work with. They are supported by quality equipment and a dedicated team.
Essential Job Functions
Provide excellent patient care by performing physical examinations, diagnosing and treating diseases, and providing preventive care.
Utilize a problem‑based approach with comprehensive problem lists, differential diagnoses, diagnostic plans, and treatments.
Document all patient observations, findings, diagnostics, treatments, medications, client interactions, and diagnoses in the medical record.
Perform routine and complex surgical procedures, including spays/neuters, abdominal explorations, and mass removals.
Perform routine and complex dental procedures, including full dental examinations, evaluation of dental radiographs, extractions, and oral surgical procedures.
Develop treatment plans for day‑hospitalization patients and communicate with referral hospitals.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Participate in rounds as incoming or exiting doctor at the beginning and end of shifts.
Disseminate knowledge throughout staff to improve patient care and client communication.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Nature of Supervision The Veterinarian is supervised by the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director and must uphold Petco Veterinary SOPs. The Veterinarian has discretion over patient care decisions.
Planning and Problem Solving Excellent problem‑solving skills are essential for expeditious diagnosis of patient problems.
Impact The position contributes to a productive practice, high‑quality care, and a cohesive, well‑trained team, enhancing employee retention, patient well‑being, and customer satisfaction.
Supervisory Responsibility There are no direct supervisory responsibilities, though the Veterinarian serves as a de facto leader in the hospital.
Education / Experience
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an AVMA‑accredited school.
Active licensure as a veterinarian without contingencies and a current DEA license.
Current Controlled Substance License (if applicable) and USDA Category I accreditation.
Comfortable performing anesthesia and routine surgeries (spays, neuters, mass removals, dentals).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Compassionate, professional attitude during emotional situations.
Team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments.
Work Environment Position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 lbs), and standing for long periods within the Vetco Total Care hospital. Direct contact with clients and pets is frequent.
