We're looking for a Documentation Engineer / Technical Writer who will own our documentation strategy and execution, and treat it like a true product that impacts users every day. In this role, your writing will directly shape how thousands of developers understand and use Baseten. Great documentation isn't just about explaining features, it's about building the right mental models, reducing time-to-value, and creating those "aha" moments when complex concepts click.
You’ll work at the intersection of product, engineering, product marketing, and our customers. You’ll see features before they ship, understand the problems they solve, and translate that into clear, comprehensive documentation that helps developers succeed. If you light up at the thought of turning a complex topic into a beautiful guide, or obsess over finding exactly the right example to illustrate a concept, we want to talk to you.
RESPONSIBILITIES Own our documentation
Own Baseten’s entire documentation—from getting started guides to advanced API and SDK references
Write new documentation for every feature we ship, ensuring nothing launches without great docs
Continuously improve existing documentation based on customer feedback, support patterns, and product evolution
Establish and maintain documentation standards, style guides, and best practices
Maintain our docs-as-code platform and proactively automate reference documentation
Shape how developers think about Baseten
Create mental models that help developers understand how Baseten works and why it's designed the way it is
Develop code examples and sample projects that demonstrate best practices and common patterns
Ensure documentation serves developers at all levels—from those deploying their first model to ML engineers optimizing for production
Partner across teams
Work closely with Product and Engineering to understand upcoming features and their customer impact
Collaborate with Customer Success to identify documentation gaps and common pain points
Partner with Product Marketing on technical content, blog posts, and product announcements
Measure and improve
Track documentation metrics including usage, search patterns, and user feedback
Identify and fix documentation gaps proactively based on support tickets and customer conversations
A/B test different documentation approaches to improve comprehension and retention
Build processes that make documentation a first-class part of our product development cycle
REQUIREMENTS
2-4 years of experience writing technical documentation, preferably for developer tools, infrastructure, or AI/ML products
Exceptional writing ability—you can explain complex technical concepts clearly and concisely
Technical aptitude to understand APIs, infrastructure concepts, and developer workflows
Self-directed work style with ability to manage multiple documentation projects independently
Experience working with documentation platforms, markdown, Git, and developer tools
Portfolio of technical writing samples that demonstrate your ability to create clear, useful documentation
NICE TO HAVE
Experience with AI/ML concepts, model deployment, or infrastructure tools
Background in software engineering or technical role
Experience building documentation systems from scratch
Understanding of SEO and discoverability best practices for technical content
BENEFITS
Competitive compensation package.
This is a unique opportunity to be part of a rapidly growing startup in one of the most exciting engineering fields of our era.
An inclusive and supportive work culture that fosters learning and growth.
Exposure to a variety of ML startups, offering unparalleled learning and networking opportunities.
