What to Expect
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer within the Solar Design team, you will be responsible for inventing and shepherding solar hardware design concepts into viable product offerings. The role requires strong fundamentals, a passion to push boundaries, and the tenacity to make your designs successful. Tesla operates under compressed timelines, so being self‑motivated, disciplined, and resilient is critical.
The Solar Design team has been highly focused on accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy. This team includes Electromechanical, Optical, Materials, Manufacturing, and Field Applications Engineering. We have designed and launched our own Solar Panel and Panel Mount hardware system, and we are the team who designed and launched Solar Roof. We are part of the broader Tesla Energy team, which includes storage and charging product development, and one of the largest residential solar installation companies in the U.S. Clean, sustainable energy generation is and will continue to play a vital role in accelerating the world's transition to sustainable abundance.
What You'll Do
Design photovoltaic retrofit and roof integrated mechanical solutions
Define key functional and performance requirement, as well as engineering validation test plans and oversee execution
Communicate conceptual design tradeoffs and challenges
Perform simulations and analysis using solid mechanics and strength of materials
Rapid prototyping and applications testing
Exploring innovative technology platforms and maturing them into product solutions
Collaborating with Industrial Design Studio on product vision
Design for manufacturability assessments
High quality drawing packages and PLM management
Writing of invention disclosures and working with Legal
What You'll Bring
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
5 years of product design experience or an advanced degree in one of the above fields
Evidence of exceptional ability
Proficiency in CAD modeling, e.g. Solidworks or CATIA
Experience with PLM systems, engineering changes, deviations, BOM structuring, etc.
Experience with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
Experience designing for high-volume assembly and manufacturing
Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills
Experience with ASCE 7 design load calculations is a bonus
Experience with product compliance and building codes is a bonus (UL2703, UL7103, UL189)

Expected Compensation $106,400 - $206,520/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
