Norfolk Police Officer The City of Norfolk is currently accepting applications for the position of Norfolk Police Officer. The effective pay for this role, starting October 4, 2025, will be between $61,200.00 and $73,076.00 annually. This position is based in Norfolk, VA 23502 and is a permanent full-time role. The Norfolk Police Department has a rich history of safeguarding lives, safeguarding property, preventing and investigating crime, and maintaining peace for the City of Norfolk. The Norfolk Police Academy provides training for various candidates : Virginia Certified Police Officers will participate in the academy training program. Certified Police Officers outside Virginia, within the United States, will undergo an 8-week academy training program. Virginia In-State Jailor / Deputy Sheriff will participate in a 25-26 week academy training program. Responsibilities

Essential functions include enforcing state and local laws, performing patrol duties, conducting criminal and traffic investigations, and providing public information. Education and experience requirements

Education and experience requirements vary based on the candidate's background : Virginia Certified Police Officers: Graduation from a DCJS approved Basic Law Enforcement Police Academy, DCJS certification, and one year of consecutive active service as a certified patrol officer. Certified Police Officers outside Virginia, within the United States: Graduation from a DCJS approved Basic Law Enforcement Police Academy, DCJS certification, and three years of consecutive active service as a certified patrol officer. Virginia In-State Jailor / Deputy Sheriff: Graduation from a DCJS approved basic Jailor Academy, Jailor certification, and one year of consecutive active service as a Jailor / Deputy Sheriff. Other requirements

Other requirements include a valid driver's license, U.S. citizenship, successful completion of all entry-level testing and assessments, and submission of specific documents such as a DMV report, Authorization for Release of Information Form, and Credit Authorization Form. Disqualifiers and examinations

Automatic disqualifiers include convictions of certain offenses, extensive moving violations, use of controlled substances, dishonorable military discharge, deceit or dishonesty, and tobacco use. Applicants must also complete a Personal History Booklet, Physical Agility Test, Psychological Examination, Background Investigation, Polygraph Examination, and Medical Examination. This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus upon completion of the probationary period.
