will participate in an 8-week academy training program at the Norfolk Police Department Training Center. The academy will provide legal, firearms, driving tactics and defensive tactics training. Essential functions
Performs the regular duties of an officer as well as specialized technical functions. Enforce state and local laws. Performs patrol duties and responds to calls for service. Performs a variety of duties and tasks related to the protection of life, property, and the preservation of the constitutional rights of every citizen. Conducts criminal and traffic investigations, field interviews, serves warrants, subpoenas and other court papers. Issues summons and makes arrests, watches for criminal, suspicious, or hazardous situations and takes appropriate policy action as necessary. Provides assistance and information to the public and assists in the prosecution of offenders. Maintains administrative requirements and provides public information. Assists supervisor with administrative responsibilities. Conduct investigations, serve as lead officer in the absence of the supervisor, and assists with crime scene processing. Provides guidance and directions to co-workers in the performance of duties. Serves on department committees and/or focus groups. Must be able to perform the physical aspects and meet the requirements and tests prescribed by the City’s Civil Service Commission. Must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. Qualifications
Certified Police Officers : Six (6) years of continuous service as a certified Police Officer. DCJS certification. Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certification. National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) certification. Other Requirements
Valid Driver’s License (prior to employment start date). U.S. Citizen (born or naturalized). Must successfully pass all entry level testing and assessments. All copies of certifications and licenses must be attached to your application Valid Driver's License (prior to employment start date). Complete and recent (generated within 1 year of application date) Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) report from the state in which you are licensed. This report should show driving history. This needs to be a complete report, the end of the document should read, This ends transmission or End of record. Completed

Use of Narcotics or Drugs: various disqualifiers related to controlled substances as specified. Military: Dishonorable discharge from the military. Physical Agility Test – events designed to simulate typical work-related situations and require physical activity. Obstacle Course completed in 2 minutes and 45 seconds. This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus. The signing bonus will be paid upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.
