The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in managing the company’s accounting and financial reporting functions within a private equity environment. This position does not include direct reports but requires the ability to provide technical accounting guidance, coaching, and mentorship to members of the Finance and Accounting team. The role is responsible for ensuring compliance with accounting standards, maintaining internal controls, and supporting the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Support the Controller in preparation of accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
Oversee the monthly close process, ensuring reconciliations, accruals, and journal entries are completed on schedule.
Review and consolidate results across business segments before submission to the Controller.
Assist in preparation of reporting packages for management, lenders, and the Board.
Accounting Operations
Manage daily accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
Support and maintain the company’s accounting policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with internal controls and GAAP.
Technical & Complex Accounting
Research and document accounting treatment for complex matters (e.g., reserves, accruals, goodwill, stock-based compensation, earnouts).
Ensure inventory is accurately costed and valued in accordance with GAAP, including oversight of standard costing, purchase price variances, overhead application, and excess & obsolete reserve calculations.
Audit & Compliance
Serve as primary liaison with external auditors during field work and testing, ensuring audit requests are completed timely and efficiently.
Systems & Process Improvement
Partner with the Controller to implement and maintain financial systems, reporting tools, and automation initiatives.
Drive continuous improvement in financial reporting and accounting processes.
Support integration of acquisitions into accounting and reporting systems.
Leadership & Team Development
Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.
Act as second-in-command to the Controller, providing leadership continuity in their absence.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Accounting. CPA license strong preferred.
7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including public accounting or corporate accounting.
Strong knowledge of GAAP and technical accounting.
Experience managing month-end close and preparation of consolidated financials.
Familiarity with ERP/accounting systems and financial reporting tools.
Proven leadership and supervisory experience.
Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Experience in distribution or automotive/manufacturing businesses;
Experience with ERP systems (INFOR M3 or similar); advanced Excel skills preferred.
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to work independently while collaborating across teams.
Comfortable in a private equity–backed, fast-paced environment.
