Salary: $47,000 to $50,000
Motlow State is located in the beautiful rolling hills of middle Tennessee and has four campuses that serve students from eleven counties. Motlow positions are contingent upon funding availability and budget approval.
General Function Under the general supervision of the Director of Public Safety, investigates crimes and accidents, protects property, facilities, citizens, staff and students by applying proactive law enforcement techniques.
Minimum Qualifications
Meet the requirements of a Certified Police Officer, per TCA 38-8-107, and be certified by the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST)
Must be a Tennessee POST certified law enforcement officer and maintain this certification throughout term of employment
Meet the requirements of TCA 38-8-106, Qualifications of Police Officers
Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
Be a citizen of the United States
Be a high school graduate or possess equivalency
Not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to any felony charge or any violation of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances
Not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States
Have his/her fingerprints on file with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation
Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician
Have a good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation conducted by the employing agency
Be free of all apparent mental disorders as described in the DSM-III of the American Psychiatric Association, certified by a qualified professional in the psychiatric or psychological fields
Must possess a valid Tennessee Operator License as issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety
Preferred Qualifications
Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from a regionally accredited institution
A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a POST Certified Law Enforcement officer; possess and maintain current Tennessee POST certification as a law enforcement officer
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Patrol campus areas
Direct, monitor, and control pedestrian and vehicle traffic
Enforce traffic and parking violations as necessary
Investigate suspected crimes, report findings, and arrest suspected individuals
Investigate motor vehicle accidents involving persons or property, report probable cause of accidents, and pursue appropriate course of action
Prepare reports, case files, and provide testimony in court or legal proceedings
Operate and maintain all assigned law enforcement equipment
Maintain POST certification by successfully completing all POST mandated annual in‑service training requirements
Meet local area and institutional requirements related to bonding, arrest authority and lethal/less‑lethal weapons use
Perform other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Tennessee State laws, Federal Education Laws, Privacy Laws and College policies
Knowledge of the court system and presentation of evidence in court proceedings
Knowledge of effective methods of investigations
Knowledge of geographic areas of the campus
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively within a diverse community
Ability to resolve conflict using verbal, non‑physical communication skills
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action
Ability to ascertain facts by personal contact, observation, and examination of records
Ability to establish and maintain an effective and trusted working relationship with students, the public and other employees
Ability to explain and interpret pertinent provisions of laws, policies, and regulations
Ability to grasp, lift, carry, wear or deploy required law enforcement equipment of up to 80 lbs. Dexterity sufficient to crawl, crouch, stoop, bend, stretch, stand, walk, run, and perform physical aspects of law enforcement, including pulling, lifting and carrying unconscious individuals from vehicles or other emergency scenes, as necessary, and to defend from aggression and physical attacks
