Job Summary The Risk Manager II assists in the systematic gathering and utilization of data essential to hospital wide risk management programs. The Risk Management programs consist of both proactive components (activities to prevent adverse occurrences (, "losses"), and reactive components (actions in response to adverse occurrences).
Reporting Reports to : Chief Legal Officer and Sr Vice President
Job Specific Responsibilities
Review, analyze, and implement solutions to help minimize the risk of harm to patient, staff, and financial loss to the hospital.
Assist Human Resources with identification of risk and potential risks in employee claims and issues
Perform risk audits for enterprise risk management in collaboration with stakeholders
Identify deviations in clinical standards of care and patient rights violations which may have risk exposure to the hospital
Provide assessment and evaluation of liability claims; this includes calculation of the probability of adverse effect(s) from risk situation
Provides data and reporting as required
Maintains actuarial reserves for UMC self- insurance program
Attend meetings as required
All other related duties assigned.
Education and Experience
(BSN) Bachelor Science in Nursing
2 years of experience as a practicing nurse
3 years of risk management and / or patient safety experience in an acute care facility
Required Licensures / Certifications / Registrations
Current license from Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners
At least (1) certification obtained through a National Accreditation Board in Health Care Risk Management (CPHRM), Patient Safety (CPPS), or the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) within 12 months of hire into the role
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking and investigative skills in stressful environments
Must have ability to create and maintain organized, confidential, and professionally documented investigative files consistent with department processes.
Must be able to apply professional judgment as needed to prioritize work to achieve a consistent professional written work product and optimal productivity.
Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite
Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships This is a system level position that works with UMCP and other affiliate entities. This position requires interaction with medical staff and ancillary areas in order to facilitate a quality multi-disciplinary approach to patient care with direct reporting to the Chief Legal Officer.
Physical Capabilities Work is of medium demand : walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Adequate hand / eye coordination and fine motor skills required.
Environmental / Working Conditions This position is subject to inside environmental changes that may include constant change in temperatures.
