Medical Instrument Technician - Echocardiography (Fee Basis)

Summary Fee‑for‑service diagnostic service role producing diagnostic‑quality images and Doppler recordings using echocardiography equipment. The position is intermittent and non‑virtual.
Responsibilities
Produce diagnostic‑quality images and Doppler frequency shift recordings using M‑mode, two‑dimensional, pulsed and continuous wave Doppler spectral display, and color flow Doppler imaging.
Identify normal echocardiographic findings and abnormal cardiovascular disease findings.
Perform cardiac studies of the heart chambers and valves with sector scanning techniques to detect stenotic and incompetent valves, chamber enlargement, pericardial effusion, and derive pressure gradients across obstructed valves.
Conduct complementary ultrasonic examinations, including transthoracic, bubble/contrast echocardiography, stress echocardiography, and transesophageal echocardiography.
Adapt transducer positioning, instrument controls, and examination techniques to individual patients, recognize pertinent abnormalities, and document findings.
Requirements
U.S. Citizenship.
Background/security investigation required.
Proficiency in written and spoken English.
Pre‑employment physical examination required.
Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.
Completion of all application and onboarding requirements.
Physical Requirements
Sitting, walking, standing, stretching, bending, and carrying light to medium weight items for short periods.
Ability to read printed material, view information on computer screens, and accurately perceive depth to move safely within the workspace.
Basic Requirements
No specific educational requirement; experience may substitute at GS‑4 or GS‑5 levels.
Licensure or certification not required but desirable at GS‑6 or higher. Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications highly preferred.
Coverage under the Grandfathering Provision applies only to current VHA employees meeting the criteria.
