Summary This Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiology) position is located at the West Roxbury, MA campus for the VA Boston Healthcare System in the Specialty Care Service. This is a full‑time, 40‑hour per week role.
Responsibilities As a GS‑9 Medical Instrument Technician for Echocardiography, the incumbent will perform echocardiography exams ranging from routine to complex in all modalities. Responsibilities include:
Perform real‑time 3‑D cardiac ultrasound using computer enhancement, reconstruction, Q‑Lab analysis, and 3‑D cropping tools.
Provide training and supervision to students in cutting‑edge modalities.
Perform basic and complex procedures such as stress, dobutamine, saline contrast, contrast echocardiography, research protocols, valve cases, and transesophageal echocardiograms as needed.
Adhere to lab protocols and adjust scanning to patient pathology.
Set up and maintain transesophageal equipment.
Assist in writing lab and scanning procedures, protocols, and policies for quality assurance and IAC accreditation.
Assist with special projects and database operations.
Manage IAC accreditation for the Echo Lab.
Compile QA data and present findings to Medical and Technical Directors.
Act as lab liaison with IAC to ensure compliance.
Improve workflow and organization via project management plans.
Triage equipment problems and coordinate corrections with other departments.
Work Schedule Full Time, Monday – Friday 8:30am – 5pm.
Compensation and Benefits Competitive salary with regular increases. Pay may be higher for exceptional qualifications. Compensation in line with VA policy for above minimum rate of grade.
Paid Time Off: 37–50 days of annual paid time off per year (13–26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays).
Parental Leave: Up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months of employment.
Child Care Subsidy: Eligible employees may receive up to 25% of childcare costs (max $416.66 monthly) after 60 days of employment.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution.
Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care.
Requirements
U.S. Citizen.
Must be subject to urinalysis screening; refusal will result in denial.
Selective Service Registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
Proficient in written and spoken English.
Subject to background/security investigation.
Must pass pre‑employment physical examination.
Participation in seasonal influenza vaccination program required.

Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship.
English language proficiency.
Experience At least 1 year of experience comparable to GS‑8 in echocardiography, directly related to the duties of the position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
Produce diagnostic‑quality images and Doppler recordings using M‑mode, 2‑D, pulsed and continuous wave Doppler, and color flow Doppler imaging.
Knowledge of normal and abnormal echocardiographic findings.
Perform complex cardiac studies, including valve assessment and pericardial effusion evaluation.
Perform transthoracic, bubble, contrast, stress, and transesophageal echocardiography.
Adapt instrument controls to individual patients and document findings.
Manage and supervise employees and provide training and staff development.
Communicate effectively with staff at all levels.
Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
Preferred Experience 5+ years in adult echocardiography; knowledge of stress treadmill and dobutamine stress echo, strain imaging, and 3‑D imaging. Certifications desirable: BCLS, ARDMS or CCI, RCS.
Physical Requirements Must be able to travel to treatment areas, stand for 8‑10 hours, lift up to 20 lb, manipulate probes, and transport patients on stretchers or wheelchairs. Must use ergonomic techniques.
