Overview Of Position
The job of Special Education Assistant/ISE-203 is to assist in the supervision, care and instruction of special‑needs students in the regular classroom or a self‑contained classroom; to help implement instruction plans; to monitor student behavior during non‑classroom time; to provide information to appropriate school personnel; and to attend IEP meetings.

The job of Special Education Assistant/ISE‑203 is to assist in the supervision, care and instruction of special‑needs students in the regular classroom or a self‑contained classroom; to help implement instruction plans; to monitor student behavior during non‑classroom time; to provide information to appropriate school personnel; and to attend IEP meetings.
Special Education Assistant job duties vary according to the school/program needs, i.e., generalist, severe/profound, behavior disorder, hearing impaired, autism, etc.
Essential Functions
Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and materials to provide an opportunity for all special education students to participate.
Administers a variety of materials and assignments (e.g., tests, homework) to assist the teacher in evaluating student progress.
Administers first aid and medical assistance as required.
Assists students requiring support with personal care due to medical conditions or physical limitations.
Attends meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures).
Confers regularly with teachers on evaluating special education student progress and implementing IEP objectives.
Communicates with teachers and parents (phone calls, e‑mails, parent–teacher meetings) to provide information related to student progress.
Directs and implements behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders to protect safety and provide a consistent environment.
Instructs students in academic subjects, social skills, and daily living skills in individual and group settings.
Maintains instructional materials and student files/records to ensure availability and reliable information.
Monitors students in various school environments to aid them and provide a safe learning environment.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Reporting Relationships Reports to the building Principal if assigned through staffing formulas; if based centrally, reports to the assigned Special Education Supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge
Basic math, reading manuals, writing documents in prescribed formats, and presenting information.
Instructional procedures and practices; age‑appropriate student activities; safety procedures; conflict resolution; stages of child development and behavior.
Skills
Perform multiple non‑technical tasks with potential need for skill upgrades.
Adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment and software; preparing accurate records.
Abilities
Gather and collate data; use job‑related equipment.
Work flexibly with diverse individuals and data, solving problems and creating action plans.
Adapt to changing priorities; communicate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality; work as part of a team.
Key‑board proficiency and basic signing ability.
Responsibilities Work under direct supervision using standardized procedures, leading, guiding, and coordinating others, and operating within a defined budget.
Working Environment Physical demands include lifting up to 50 lb, carrying, pushing, and frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Job typically involves 45% sitting, 25% walking, and 30% standing in a clean and healthy environment.
Education & Qualifications Typical Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
At least one of the following: qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment; an associate degree or higher; seventy‑two quarter credits or forty‑eight semester credits at the one‑hundred level or higher; completed apprenticeship as a paraeducator in a Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council‑registered program.
Preferred Experience Experience working with children.
Certificates & Licenses Valid Washington State driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
Continuing Education / Training Secure Training: CPR, First Aid.
Clearances Criminal Justice Fingerprint Background Clearance.
Benefits Benefits are administered by the Washington State Healthcare Authority (HCA) under the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB). Eligibility is based on hours worked during the school year. Employees scheduled to work 630 hours or more in a year are eligible for benefits.
