Must have completed or be able to complete the School Resource Officer basic course.
Pay: $29.00 per hour + approximately 3% for every 2 years of certified DCJS law enforcement service. Full hiring range for this position $29.87–$48.67 per hour.
School Resource Officers are assigned to County middle and high schools to provide information to students, parents, and staff regarding law enforcement and the criminal justice system. SROs maintain high visibility at schools, attend student functions, teach curriculum units, and provide classroom presentations on varied topics.
Performs responsible protective service work in the Sheriff’s Office involving a variety of general or support duty assignments and involving an element of personal danger; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a School Resource Officer Sergeant.
Responsibilities
Enforce laws; investigate criminal activity; maintain records and files; prepare reports; testify in court.
Work collaboratively with schools to resolve problems that threaten the safety of the schools.
Reinforce clear expectations for appropriate behavior through enforcement of laws, law‑related education, and involvement in crime prevention activities.
Engage students to help improve relationships, encourage reporting of criminal activity, and help reduce delinquent behavior within schools and the community.
Identify and address security‑related issues within the school.
Provide classroom presentations on crime prevention and fundamental concepts and structure of the law.
Teach law‑related education, de‑escalation techniques, and conflict resolution to students and staff.
Coordinate and oversee youth programs.
Coordinate security coverage for after‑school activities and events that produce large crowds.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures; general knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings.
Some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff’s Office.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports.
Ability to deal courteously, firmly, and tactfully with the public; analyze situations and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards.
Possession of physical agility and endurance; skill in the use of firearms and operation of a motor vehicle.
Possession of all qualifications as required by the Code of Virginia, the Department of Criminal Justice Services, and the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
Education and Experience
Current Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Certification.
2 years of prior law enforcement experience (required).
Graduation from high school or high school equivalency.
Valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
United States citizen, 21 years of age or older at time of hire.
Meet and maintain all Stafford County Sheriff’s Office and State Criminal Justice System training and education requirements for the position.
Additional Requirements
Pass physical agility testing, interview, polygraph examination, full background investigation (including criminal history check, physical examination, psychological examination, and drug and alcohol testing).
Position is designated as essential and may require reporting during local government or agency closure, subject to call‑back and hold‑over to maintain minimum staffing 24/7.
Heavy work requiring exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects; lifting or dragging, for short distances, of 165 pounds occasionally; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, etc.
Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and may require specialized personal protective equipment. Exposure to indoor/outdoor environmental conditions including extreme cold, heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions; wearing a respirator may be required.
