Duties and Responsibilities
Installation:
Install various HVAC equipment, including furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, ventilation systems, and refrigeration units, following blueprints, specifications, and manufacturer instructions.
Maintenance:
Perform routine and preventive maintenance tasks such as cleaning coils, lubricating parts, inspecting electrical connections, replacing filters, checking refrigerant levels, and ensuring proper operation and efficiency of systems.
Repair and Troubleshooting:
Diagnose and troubleshoot system malfunctions and electrical/mechanical faults. Identify faulty components and perform necessary repairs or replacements to restore optimal functionality.
System Testing and Performance Evaluation:
Use specialized tools to test and measure airflow, temperature, pressure, and refrigerant levels, making adjustments as needed to improve performance.
Customer Service:
Interact with clients to discuss HVAC needs, explain issues, provide maintenance tips, recommend system upgrades or replacements, and ensure customer satisfaction.
Safety and Compliance:
Adhere to safety guidelines and industry regulations, especially related to refrigerant conservation, recovery, and recycling, ensuring equipment complies with regulatory standards.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, service calls, time worked, and materials used.
Emergency Response:
Respond to emergency service calls, which may include working irregular hours, evenings, or weekends, especially during peak heating and cooling seasons.
Physically demanding, requiring lifting heavy equipment, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
Education, Training, and Certification
Most HVAC technicians need postsecondary instruction from technical and trade schools or community colleges. Programs typically last from 2 years to 5 years and lead to a certificate.

Strong understanding of HVACR systems, electrical components, controls, and various technologies.
Mechanical Aptitude:
Proficiency in using tools and equipment for installation, repair, and maintenance.
