Job Description The Department of Sociology and Criminology & Law at the University of Florida, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure‑accruing position beginning August 16, 2026 at the rank of Assistant Professor with research and teaching interests related to legal decision‑making. This position supports the Law & Society component of our program in Criminology & Law by emphasizing the study of the social context of law. The focus is on legal and extra‑legal factors affecting decision‑making in the legal system, decision patterns that emerge across cases, and the impacts of those patterns on individuals, communities, and policies. Candidates may emphasize theory development, methodological applications (quantitative, qualitative and/or mixed), policy analysis, or legal expertise in research and teaching.
Responsibilities
Provide undergraduate and graduate instruction in courses related to legal decision‑making.
Develop and maintain a rigorous research program in legal decision‑making, producing peer‑reviewed scholarship and securing external funding.
Mentor graduate students and contribute significantly to graduate education.
Engage in departmental service, professional development, and community outreach.
Support the Department’s diverse research, teaching, and mentorship goals.
Qualifications
Ph.D. in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or a relevant social science field by date of hire. A law degree by itself is not sufficient.
Evidence of rigorous scholarship and potential to obtain external funding.
Evidence of excellence in teaching and the ability to mentor graduate students.
Ability to contribute to diverse theoretical viewpoints and open academic exchanges through scholarship, teaching, mentoring, and service.
Preferred
Research focusing on legal and extra‑legal factors affecting decision‑making, including AI, racial profiling, use of force, enforcement, judicial processes, and post‑trial decisions.
Experience in securing external funding and publishing in top journals.
