Electrical Project Engineer – Substation
Location: Overland Park, KS (Kansas City) – World Headquarters of Black & Veatch Corporation.

The Electrical Project Engineer – Substation will coordinate technical design and engineering on high‑voltage substation projects.

The Opportunity As an Electrical Project Engineer you will act as a technical specialist or project lead on substation projects ranging up to 765kV, providing detailed design, quality review, budgeting and stakeholder communication. You will also mentor junior team members, support business development activities, and collaborate with clients, vendors and subcontractors.
Key Responsibilities
Develop protection and control designs, including protective relays, panel arrangements, one‑line/single‑line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, relay panel wiring and equipment wiring.
Create physical design deliverables such as yard layout plans, grounding and lightning protection, control building arrangements, and auxiliary AC/DC power systems.
Perform or oversee quality review of electrical substation design packages.
Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
Prepare electrical equipment specifications and Bills of Materials (BOM) for procurement and construction.
Coordinate project activities with clients, vendors, subcontractors and other stakeholders.
Present proposals, designs and project activities to internal and external audiences.
Travel to client and vendor offices and project sites for design reviews, construction coordination and field verification.
Manage design budgets and schedules.
Support business development and pursuit activities.
Preferred Qualifications
High‑voltage (HV) substation design experience – Physical design or Protection & Controls.
Project lead and technical specialist experience on utility substation projects.
Experience with QA/QC reviews.
Strong communication skills across clients, multidisciplinary leads and project managers.
Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
At least 5 years of related work experience. Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent EOR authorization.
Ability to complete pre‑employment onboarding, including background checks and drug screening.
Certifications Active engineering registration or licensure for EOR on BV projects in applicable countries (U.S. Professional Engineer‑PE license).
Work Environment/Physical Demands Hybrid or flexible work options may be available after the first 90 days based on manager discretion and job assignments.

Salary Plan Regulated: Registered Engineering (Job Grade 016).
