Summary
The audiologist at this level conducts, plans, and coordinates all clinical and administrative aspects of a full range of services associated with contemporary audiology practice. Clinical duties and responsibilities include direct patient care involving a full range of audiology and treatment services, including the selection and fitting of hearing aids and other amplification systems and devices, aural (auditory) rehabilitation, and counseling of hearing‑impaired veterans and their families.

Duties / Responsibilities
Complete compensation and pension examinations.
Conduct tele‑audiology appointments with other CBOCs as needed.
Identify and evaluate individuals with hearing disorders in reception and perception of speech, language, and other acoustic signals.
Administer full range of tests including vestibular nerve function; evaluate type and degree of hearing loss for patients with inconsistent diagnostic reactions.
Plan, deliver, and monitor effectiveness of patient‑centered treatment and rehabilitative services, including selection and fitting of all types of hearing aids, programming of digital hearing aids, issuance of hearing protection devices, selection and fitting of assistive devices (personal and FM amplifiers, telephone amplifiers, radio or TV magnetic induction devices), and inspection, modification, and repair of amplification devices and ear molds.
Coordinate auditory (aural) rehabilitation and tinnitus programs; design patient‑centered treatment plans.
Program cochlear implants and provide remote programming as needed, following VA Cochlear Implant Guidelines.
Serve as consultant to other facility personnel on complex cases; recognized expert on hearing, tinnitus, and balance disorders.
Supervise, evaluate, mentor, and precept student trainees in audiology; liaise with affiliated colleges/universities.
Maintain professional competency through continuing education, professional journals, and collaboration with other professionals.
Maintain proper calibration of specialized electroacoustic instrumentation; possess knowledge of technical aspects of clinical and calibration instruments.
Participate in research activities and assist in gathering clinical research data.
Perform ancillary assignments, including program‑management duties when required.
Follow facility scheduling policies, enter Return to Clinic (RTC) orders, and answer consults as needed.
Conditions of Employment
U.S. Citizenship required.
Selective Service registration for males born after 12/31/1959.
Proficiency in written and spoken English.
Probationary period may be required.
Background/security investigation required.
Completion of online onboarding process.
Participation in seasonal influenza vaccination program required.
Qualifications Basic Requirements
Doctor of Audiology (AuD) from an ASHA‑accredited program or equivalent doctoral degree in hearing science.
Full, current, and unrestricted state license to practice audiology at the doctoral level.
Foreign education must be equivalent to U.S. program standards.
Grandfathering and licensure provisions apply for existing staff; see VA Handbook 5005/38.
Experience
Completion of one year of professional experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS‑11).
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
Determining nature, type, and severity of hearing/communication/vestibular disorders.
Counseling patients and families regarding management of hearing/communication/vestibular disorders.
Providing professional advice and consultation to other health care professionals.
Independently applying contemporary audiologic treatments to diverse patient populations.
Assignment
This is the full performance level for staff audiologists. At this level, audiologists diagnose disorders, conduct assessments, treat auditory disorders through various modalities, provide adjunctive interventions, and may be involved in program evaluation, teaching, training, and research activities.
