Mechanical Liaison Design Engineer
Location:
Hanover, MD (On-site)
Role Overview The Mechanical Liaison Engineer serves as the critical bridge between mechanical design engineering, manufacturing, and quality control for our power distribution equipment. This role combines hands‑on manufacturing support with design responsibilities, ensuring manufacturability while contributing to product development.
Key Responsibilities Manufacturing Interface
Provide real‑time technical support to manufacturing teams during assembly operations
Troubleshoot mechanical issues on the production floor and implement solutions
Review engineering designs for manufacturability and provide feedback to design teams
Support prototype builds and new product introductions
Assist in quality control inspections and resolution of mechanical non‑conformances
Design Support
Support mechanical design activities for switchgear and power distribution equipment
Create and modify 3D models and manufacturing drawings using CAD software
Perform basic mechanical calculations and design analysis
Assist in developing mechanical design standards and best practices
Support custom engineering projects and design modifications
Process Improvement
Develop manufacturing work instructions and assembly procedures
Create and maintain technical documentation including assembly drawings and process sheets
Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance production efficiency
Assist in implementation of design for manufacturing (DFM) principles
Help establish mechanical assembly standards and quality procedures
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Interface between design engineering teams and manufacturing operations
Work closely with electrical engineers to ensure proper electro‑mechanical integration
Coordinate with quality teams to resolve mechanical design and manufacturing issues
Support field service teams with technical guidance when needed
Communicate design changes and updates across departments
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
2‑5 years of experience in mechanical design or manufacturing engineering
Proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
Understanding of manufacturing processes, particularly sheet metal fabrication
Knowledge of industry standards (UL, NEMA) preferred
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively in both office and manufacturing environments
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with power distribution equipment or electrical enclosures
Knowledge of sheet metal design and fabrication processes
Familiarity with PLM/PDM systems
Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
Experience with custom‑engineered products
Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles
Previous liaison experience between engineering and manufacturing
Understanding of quality systems and inspection processes
This role provides excellent exposure to both design engineering and manufacturing, creating pathways for advancement into senior engineering roles, manufacturing leadership, or technical project management positions.
