Assistant Attorney General (Education Law)
The Education Unit of the Arizona Attorney General's Office / State Government Division is seeking a dedicated Assistant Attorney General to perform complex legal work for the State's education agencies.
Role Description / Duties
The Education Unit provides legal representation and general counsel for matters and disputes involving state and federal education law such as FERPA and the IDEA, Open Meeting Law, public records law, administrative law, state and federal constitutional law, and more. Typical litigation matters include administrative proceedings in the Office of Administrative Hearings and before the U.S. Department of Education – Office of Civil Rights, educator discipline proceedings before the Board of Education's Professional Practices Advisory Committee, civil actions in superior court, and appellate work. Day-to-day tasks include attending client meetings; drafting and negotiating settlement agreements and other contracts; drafting pleadings, motions, and legal briefs; interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence for trial/hearings; conducting legal research and analysis; preparing legal opinions; advising on policy development and rulemaking; ensuring legal compliance of public educational institutions.
Qualifications
Licensed to practice law in the State of Arizona
Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
Experience or interest in public service or governmental legal services is a plus
Strong skills in conducting legal researchExcellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a hybrid environment
