Sr. Thermal Systems Engineer - Lunar Permanence
role to contribute to the definition and development of spacecraft thermal control systems. This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Moon landers and related products to enable sustainable transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. As part of a hardworking team of engineers, you will contribute to the design and development of thermal control systems for spacecraft. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, delivering innovative solutions while demonstrating leadership, technical competence, and attention to detail. You will work directly with the vehicle design team as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program, playing a key role in developing the Lunar Transportation system that will return humans to the Moon. The
Thermal Systems Engineer III
works within the Thermal Integrated Product Team (Thermal IPT). You will perform and lead Systems Engineering (SE) tasks and deliver SE-related products, collaborating with Thermal Analysts and Designers and across other IPTs to ensure the Thermal Subsystem is successful within the larger spacecraft and mission. We are looking for someone to apply technical expertise, leadership, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Responsibilities Develop & manage Thermal specifications and requirements (at subsystem and component levels) Develop & manage Thermal interfaces, including Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and models (in collaboration with adjacent IPTs) Decompose requirements from system and subsystem levels into lower-level requirements Serve as thermal point of contact for inputs to vehicle system safety products and risk management Mentor early-career Thermal Systems Engineers on the Lunar Program Standardize Thermal Systems Engineering approaches Own the verification and validation of Thermal requirements, with Thermal test engineers Perform traceability analysis of requirements to higher levels and to verification activities Lead trade studies across the Thermal IPT and with other IPTs Serve as the thermal point-of-contact for other IPTs Utilize Systems Engineering tools such as Jama, Windchill and Cameo Support and present at major gated reviews including design and readiness reviews Qualifications Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering 8+ years of relevant Thermal Engineering or Systems Engineering experience on space missions Understanding of heat transfer fundamentals in space environment Strong understanding and application of Systems Engineering fundamentals in areas such as requirements management, verification, and/or integration Familiarity with common spacecraft thermal hardware Strong understanding of aerospace hardware verification and validation processes Desired M.S. or PhD degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering 12+ years of relevant Thermal Engineering or Systems Engineering experience on space missions Expertise in pumped fluid loop hardware (pumps, cold plates, radiators, valves, heat exchangers) and semi-passive devices (sensors and heaters) Familiarity with NASA Systems Engineering process and standards Experience solving diverse thermal problems; breadth in application Expertise in requirements management software such as Jama Compensation Compensation ranges vary by location: CA applicants $140,959.00-$197,342.25; CO applicants $129,611.00-$181,454.70; WA applicants $140,959.00-$197,342.25.
