Job Title Assistant Professor

Job Purpose We invite applications for a School of Energy Resources (SER) faculty position housed within the Department of Chemical & Biomedical Engineering (ChBE) at the University of Wyoming. The position is at the rank of Assistant Professor, but qualified individuals may be considered at a higher rank, with a rank commensurate with their experience. These are 9-month, full-time, benefited appointments with a start date of August 2026. The Assistant Professor position will be tenure‑track, and the open rank position will be tenure‑track or tenured if at the Associate or Full Professor rank. We envision the successful candidate to be an independent researcher who will develop strong, externally funded research programs and who will excel in a collaborative university setting through contributions to research, teaching, and outreach. Participation in SER Research Centers’ related activities is expected. Research in all areas relating to separation, extraction, and processes will be considered, with preference for interest or expertise in the separation, extraction, and/or post‑mining processes of strategic minerals for Wyoming, such as rare earth metals, trona, gold, nickel, or uranium.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities The successful candidate will join a ChBE department of 11 tenured or tenure‑track faculty and 2 teaching faculty that provides B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering, as well as undergraduate minors in 1) Process Control and Instrumentation and 2) Biomedical Engineering. The candidate should have a strong commitment to teaching, independent research, and service to UW and the State. We seek faculty members who will create a climate that embraces excellence, with a commitment to education that will enhance the work of the department and attract and retain a diverse student body.

Department Information The Department of Chemical & Biomedical Engineering (ChBE) has vibrant undergraduate and graduate programs, offering degrees at the BS, MS, and PhD levels in chemical engineering. The ChBE Department is in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS) at the University of Wyoming, which comprises 9 departments. The department and college benefit from the support of a state‑funded Tier‑1 Engineering Initiative to elevate the college to national prominence in education and research and to enhance economic development in Wyoming. University, state, and industrial partners have invested over $250M to establish first‑rate facilities and a core of highly talented faculty and students in this effort.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in chemical engineering or a related discipline at the time of appointment

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Desired Qualifications

Postdoctoral training or industrial experience in a related field by the time of hire

Interest and experience in process engineering (extraction and separation) of rare earth elements and critical minerals, focusing on minerals relevant to Wyoming

Experience with scaling up technologies from bench to pilot scale

Demonstrated ability to conduct cutting‑edge research

High potential for securing external funding to support research

High potential for effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level

Demonstrated commitment to effective collaboration
