Overview
Under the direction of the Sterile Processing Manager, the WIP Sterile Processing Supervisor oversees daily sterile processing operations within the Women’s and Infant Pavilion SPD area. The Supervisor provides on‑site leadership, technical expertise, and staff supervision to ensure proper decontamination, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments and equipment in accordance with AAMI, AORN, TJC, CDPH, and hospital standards. The Supervisor acts as a liaison between the main SPD, WIP surgical services, and other departments, ensuring quality, consistency, and compliance with regulatory requirements. Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision
– Oversee daily workflow of the WIP SPD, supervise SPD technicians, conduct daily huddles, provide input on scheduling and coverage, and mentor staff. Operations
– Ensure proper decontamination, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of instruments in accordance with manufacturer IFUs and regulatory requirements; monitor quality indicators and maintain sterilization logs. Education & Quality
– Provide orientation and competency validation, participate in in‑service education, audits, and competency assessments, and support quality assurance, infection prevention, and performance improvement initiatives. Customer Service & Communication
– Serve as primary point of contact for OR leadership and staff, collaborate with L&D and ancillary departments, promote teamwork, accountability, and open communication between WIP SPD and main SPD staff. Additional Duties
Assist the SPD Manager with reports, metrics, and department meetings. Participate in departmental audits, environmental care rounds, and tracer activities. Support scheduling of preventive maintenance with Biomed and Engineering. Qualifications
Education
– High School Diploma or GED required; completion of a Sterile Processing education program required; Associate’s degree preferred. Minimum three (3) years of experience in sterile processing within an acute care hospital required; at least one (1) year of lead or supervisory experience preferred; experience in Women’s Services or L&D surgical environments highly desirable. Certifications
Current certification as a Central Service Technician (CRCST or CSPDT) required. Certification in Leadership (CHL) preferred or required within one year of hire. Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) or Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) preferred. Conduct and Compliance Expectations
Adhere to AVMC Attendance, Punctuality, Leaves of Absence, and PTO policies. Follow department dress code and telephone etiquette standards. Maintain confidentiality of patient, hospital, and department information. Follow safety rules and regulations, use equipment safely and effectively, and interpret and function under hospital and department policies and procedures.
