Purpose The purpose of the class is to provide strategic leadership and administrative oversight for the Department of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services Division of Athletics. This position is responsible for developing and implementing division goals, policies, and initiatives that support citywide athletic programs, leagues, and facility operations. The Athletic Manager directs professional and paraprofessional staff engaged in program coordination, facility management, and customer service to ensure effective delivery of quality recreation experiences for the community. This position works under the general supervision of the Recreation Administrator and exercises considerable independent judgment in decision‑making, planning, and managing division resources.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Sports Management or a related field of study.

• Five (5) years of full‑time equivalent progressively responsible experience in athletic recreation programming, to include experience working with the public for youth and adult services.

• Three (3) years of supervisory experience to include one (1) year of experience in effective volunteer recruitment and management.

• A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Additional Requirements

• Must possess CPR and First Aid Certification within 90 days of employment.

• Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.

• This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.

• Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

• May require working beyond a standard 40‑hour work week.

• The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.

• Requires excellent communication and collaboration with internal departments, community partners, and the public.
