Department Summary The English Department at Bridgewater State University (BSU) is a collegial, dynamic program with 22 full-time faculty members. Approximately 380 majors select one of four concentrations: Literature and Creative Writing, Literary Studies, English Education, and Writing and Rhetoric. Average student/faculty ratio in the major is 16:1. The English Department is part of the cohesive BSU campus community that provides professional opportunities for faculty advancement in teaching and scholarship and a clear path to tenure. Funding for faculty scholarship is available through the Center for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship as well as the Office of Teaching and Learning. There is also a significant institutional commitment and resources for international engagement and student research.

The English Department at Bridgewater State University is interested in identifying a colleague to join our vibrant and newly expanded Writing and Writing Studies concentration within the English major as a tenure track Assistant Professor, beginning in Fall 2026.

Responsibilities The selected candidate will teach courses primarily in Writing and Writing Studies, including our award‑winning first‑year writing program; advanced composition and rhetoric; and courses of special interest that contribute to the development of the concentration and the major. The candidate may also teach graduate courses in their area of specialization in the Master of Arts in English and the Master of Arts in Teaching English.

Additional duties include advising students; engaging in curriculum and instructional development; providing appropriate service to the university, the public, and the profession; and engaging students through the Academic Achievement Center to provide multilingual services and tutoring. The standard course load at BSU is 4/4, with opportunities for release from course load to provide multilingual services.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in a closely related field, in hand by August 31, 2026. A Ph.D. in TESOL is not considered appropriate for this position.

Teaching experience in first‑year writing and one or more of the requested areas of primary and secondary expertise (Multilingual Writing, Linguistics, and/or Sociolinguistics, Composition Theory, Writing Pedagogies, Technical & Professional Writing, Writing in the Sciences, or Cultural Rhetorics).

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition in hand by August 31, 2026.

Applicants with research and teaching interests in Multilingual Writing, Linguistics, and/or Sociolinguistics are preferred.

Secondary areas of interest include Composition Theory, Writing Pedagogies, Technical and Professional Writing, Writing in the Sciences, or Cultural Rhetorics.

Applicants with experience in program administration and personnel supervision are also preferred.
