Summary
The Training Specialist serves as the regional Wildland Fire Training Officer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Eastern Regional Office. The duty station is Nashville, TN, with location negotiable. This position is filled via Direct-Hire Authority; veteran’s preference and category rating do not apply.
Overview Open from 10/17/2025 to 10/31/2025. Salary: $82,812 to $107,650 per year (salary will be set in accordance with the final location pay scale). Location: Nashville, TN (Location Negotiable).
Duties / Responsibilities
Serve as the regional Wildland Fire Training Officer and technical advisor to the Regional Fire Management Officer.
Formulate and coordinate planning, development, implementation, documentation, and delivery of wildland fire training courses, regional succession planning, and workforce development.
Provide program leadership and direction in fire management training for a regional BIA Fire Management Program.
Work with unit fire management officers to develop comprehensive fire management training curriculum, courses, and materials.
Ensure training programs and materials reflect fire management policy direction, objectives, and regulations.
Evaluate inter‑agency training courses and assist in developing new national and regional courses to meet training needs and skills requirements.
Qualifications BASIC REQUIREMENT FOR GS-1712:
Under the OPM Operating Manual, applicants must meet either an undergraduate or graduate degree in a major directly related to the position (e.g., biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, environmental science, earth or atmospheric science) OR specialized experience equivalent to the methods and techniques of instruction. Specialized experience must include:
Teaching or instructing in adult education, secondary school, college, military installation, or industrial establishment.
Supervising or administering a training program.
Developing or reviewing training/course materials, aids, and evaluation of training results.
Work in the occupation or subject‑matter field where training others is regular.
Applicants must also satisfy one of the following for GS‑11 level:
1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑9.
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
Three full years of progressively higher‑level graduate education leading to such a degree.
LL.M. in a related field.
Prior Wildland Firefighting experience is a mandatory prerequisite. The role is a secondary‑administrative position for a firefighting agency.
Education Transcripts (official or unofficial are acceptable, though official may be requested later). Education must be from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
