Career Opportunity – Tax Auditor 1 (Underfill for Tax Auditor 2)
The Idaho State Tax Commission is recruiting multiple
Tax Auditor 1
positions ( Underfill for Tax Auditor 2 ) in the Audit Division within the Sales/Fuels Tax Bureau located in Pocatello and Idaho Falls, Idaho. This role is ideal for those with a bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field and a desire for a career in public service where work-life balance, flexible schedules, and opportunities for advancement are valued.
What You Need for Success
Develop knowledge of state and federal tax laws, rules, and regulations as they apply to various taxes.
Be resourceful and research tax issues encountered in an audit.
Interpret and apply tax laws to individual and business situations.
Discuss tax issues using various resources to support your decision.
Apply and understand ethics and confidentiality laws.
Effectively and professionally communicate both orally and in writing.
Develop a broad knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping.
Responsibilities
Communicate with taxpayers and their representatives to verify the accuracy of tax returns through review of accounting systems, financial statements, work papers, tax and payroll records, and other relevant documents.
Research and analyze data for accuracy to ensure compliance with state tax laws and regulations.
Prepare audit findings and summaries.
Identify legal issues and apply appropriate statutes, rules, and legal precedents.
Manage audits of various tax types including amusement devices, business income, cigarette tax, E911 prepaid wireless fee, electricity tax, property tax, sales/use tax, and others listed in the full responsibilities section.
Participate in team audits.
Occasional overnight travel within the geographic area of the United States may be required.
Minimum Qualifications Good knowledge of accounting principles and practices is required.
This is typically gained by completing 12 upper‑division accounting courses (ACCT 300‑499 level) for a bachelor’s degree in accounting, or by having at least three (3) years of experience as an accountant applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Students who are in their final semester earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business with an accounting emphasis are encouraged to apply.
Upon successful completion of the requirements to become a Tax Auditor 2, the incumbent will complete the underfill and be reclassified to a Tax Auditor 2. The current minimum rate is $27.70 per hour. This announcement may also be used to fill future Tax Auditor 1 openings.
Background Check Includes a background questionnaire, FBI nationwide, fingerprint‑based criminal history check, verification of tax compliance, and receipt of positive references.
