This position is considered a Safety‑Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. The purpose of this position is to ensure the safety of citizens and property by preventing, reporting, investigating, and analyzing crime within the City's limits.

Essential Functions

Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.

Patrol assigned zone and interact with citizens.

Respond to call for service.

Prevent, detect, and investigate criminal activity.

Enforce state and federal laws, city ordinances, and issue citations.

Assist other officers in active investigations.

Investigate crash and crime scenes, document calls, file reports, and prepare case files for judicial proceedings.

Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects.

Issue search warrants and conduct searches of persons and property.

Prepare court cases, communicate with district attorney’s office, and appear in court to testify.

Inspect and maintain assigned equipment.

Attend training sessions.

Provide security at community events.

Read and understand technical instructions, procedures, manuals, and charts to solve practical problems, compose routine reports and specialized reports, forms, and business letters with proper format; speak compound sentences with normal grammar and word form.

Understand and validly enforce federal and state laws and local ordinances while exercising good judgment and reasonable discretion.

Possess temperament and good judgment to effectively and diplomatically deal with all members of the public, including those who are irate and unreasonable.

Perform other work as assigned.

Additional Essential Functions for Canine Trainer

Be a certified trainer or certifying official with a nationally recognized canine training association.

Have background in law enforcement canine training techniques, such as obedience training, patrol work, non‑aggressive tracking, narcotic detection, explosive detection, and cadaver detection.

Participate in the selection and training of a canine, establishing and attending formal training as necessary to prepare the canine for duty.

Host and instruct weekly training for all Murfreesboro canine teams and other department members as needed.

Create and maintain all training records for Murfreesboro Police Department canine teams.

Maintain yearly certification for each canine team discipline through a nationally recognized canine training association.

Maintain records on K9 use including training, certification(s), and deployments.

Coordinate veterinarian care, immunizations, routine care, and other required for canines.

Serve as the liaison on matters pertaining to the K9 unit.

Provide guidance and professional development to canine handlers.

Maintain and oversee the care and maintenance of training equipment.

Complete and disseminate statistical reports as assigned.

Ensure all canine handlers complete the proper documentation regarding canine use.

Establish positive relationships within Murfreesboro Police canine teams.

Law enforcement duties: emphasize understanding current Fourth Amendment updates, law enforcement canine TCA updates, and court rulings that may affect the canine program.

Develop partnerships with other law enforcement agencies for additional training opportunities.

Additional Essential Functions for School Resource Officers

Coordinate safety measures: collaborate with school administrators to develop and implement safety protocols, emergency response plans, and crisis management procedures; provide assistance, advice, and guidance in the development of threat assessments and safety plans.

Regularly patrol school campuses to deter criminal activity, address safety concerns, and maintain a visible police presence; promote and facilitate school environments that are safe from crime and disorder.

Respond to incidents within schools, including threats and other safety‑related issues.

Build relationships: establish positive relationships with students, teachers, parents, and community members; mentor, counsel, advise, and support students, parents, teachers, and school administrators as necessary and appropriate.

Educational programs: facilitate educational programs on topics such as alcohol or drug prevention, cyber safety, conflict resolution, or other similar programs; provide training/presentations to administrators, staff, teachers, counselors, interventionists, parent groups, and community groups on a wide variety of “safe school” related topics.

Attend school events: participate in school events, assemblies, and parent‑teacher meetings to engage with the school community; perform school resource officer duties and responsibilities at after‑hours events and other school‑related functions.

Law enforcement duties: emphasize understanding current juvenile laws and court rulings that may affect the school systems and juvenile offenders.

Serve as a role model: mentor students, promote positive behavior, and encourage academic success.

Work with school staff: collaborate with teachers, counselors, and administrators to address behavioral issues and provide support to students; work with MCS Administration to promote the use of School system code of conduct for disciplinary issues.

Liaise with parents: communicate with parents regarding safety concerns, incidents, and student well‑being.

Coordinate with other agencies: make appropriate student referrals to outside service agencies as needed; partner with social services, mental health professionals, and other agencies to support students’ needs.

Physical and Sensory Demands

Possess the physical ability to run and the strength to apprehend law violators.

Compute, stand, bend, stoop, reach, push and pull, frequently lift objects and persons, climb stairs, walk, and run intermittently.

Applicants must pass a physical agility test consisting of job‑related bodily condition, muscular strength, agility, and physical coordination; test elements include running, pushing/pulling and carrying of weight, and climbing stairs.

Operate law enforcement equipment including police vehicles with all emergency equipment, mobile radios, hand‑held radios, recorders, fingerprint equipment, cameras, video cameras, copy machine, facsimile machine, personal computer and peripheral equipment, radar equipment, and both lethal and non‑lethal weapons such as pistols, rifles, shotguns, ASP batons, and OC spray.

Involve routine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals; explosives; violence; bloodborne pathogens.

Involve exposure to all types of weather conditions, some of which will be inclement.

Work will involve exposure to dangerous conditions and situations and frequent exposure to violence.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Certified as a Police Officer.

Citizen of the United States of America or a permanent legal resident of the United States who is an honorably discharged veteran of the United States armed forces. As required by T.C.A.§38‑8‑105(d), a permanent legal resident as of the officer’s employment start date must apply for or obtain U.S. citizenship within six years of the officer’s employment start date; failure to obtain U.S. citizenship within six (6) years shall constitute grounds for termination of the officer’s employment.

Visual acuity of 20/30 in each eye corrected; uncorrected vision sufficient to act to protect self and others in emergency situations.

Meet all lawful qualifications established by Tennessee law to be certified by the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (“P.O.S.T.”), T.C.A. Section 38‑8‑106 and regulations as amended.

School Resource Officer Additional Requirements and Experience

Minimum of three years of full‑time experience as a Tennessee P.O.S.T. certified law enforcement officer or equivalent certification by another state or federal agency.

Prior experience or certification as a School Resource Officer is encouraged but not required.

Special Certifications and Licenses

Obtain and maintain Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission P.O.S.T. certification.

Have a valid driver’s license.

Be certified by a Tennessee Licensed Healthcare Provider qualified in the psychiatric or psychological fields and free from any disorder that would impair job functions.

School Resource Officer Requirements

School Resource Officer certification as required by TCA 49‑6‑4217.

Successfully complete the Field Training and Evaluation Program before being assigned to the School Resource Officer Position.
