Overview
City of Plano seeks a HVAC / Building Systems Technician or Senior HVAC / Building Systems Technician to maintain and optimize the City’s essential infrastructure. Competitive hourly wages apply by classification. A Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) background check is required.
Location & Status All location types within Plano. Full‑time, regular position.
Responsibilities – HVAC / Building Systems Technician
Perform general and preventive maintenance on elevators, HVAC, alarm, security, electrical, emergency power, boiler, cooling towers and energy management systems; remove snow/ice as needed.
Adhere to preventive maintenance schedules; assist in developing new schedules for newly constructed buildings.
Diagnose, repair or replace faulty components.
Inspect fire suppression, fire alarms, access control, security,power and emergency systems.
Assess equipment condition and recommend replacement when appropriate.
Obtain bids for simple repairs, submit bids to supervisors for award consideration.
Coordinate contracted services for preventive maintenance and minor repairs.
Review contractor specifications and assist in construction and remodeling projects.
Maintain accurate records of work activities, supplies and materials; proficient use of PC and common software is required.
Support the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor with cost estimates for budgeting.
Mentor junior staff on training needs and safety procedures.
Maintain regular attendance in accordance with scheduled hours.

Typical Decisions
Evaluate equipment replacement timing based on performance data, inspections and component condition.
Read and interpret construction drawings, diagrams and technical documentation to understand system layouts.
Identify deviations between actual installations and specifications; take corrective actions as necessary.
Troubleshoot faults by isolating issues, performing tests, and determining necessary repairs or replacements while aligning with safety standards.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of installation, maintenance and repair methods for commercial building systems including elevators, HVAC, alarm, security, electrical, emergency power, boiler, cooling towers and energy management.
Proficiency in personal computer use and common software applications.
Skills
Perform simple mathematical calculations and analytics.
Diagnose systems using journey‑level methods.
Operate light trucks and motorized equipment safely.
Use hand and power tools; lift and handle heavy objects safely.
Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Education High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience Three (3) years minimum, five (5) years preferred of progressive responsibility in repair and maintenance of commercial HVAC or electrical distribution systems.
Licenses and Certifications
Texas Class C driver’s license (obtain within 30 days of hire).
CFC reclamation and recycling license Types I and II, and mobile air conditioning.
Senior HVAC / Building Systems Technician – Summary of Duties Under basic supervision monitor, coordinate and perform operations, maintenance and repair of City buildings and support systems such as HVAC, electrical, lighting, fire suppression, sound, kitchen equipment, UPS, card access and vote tally systems.
Distinguishing Characteristics Journey‑level classification; performs tasks independently, with advanced diagnostics requiring supervision as needed. Distinguished from Technician by higher technical and diagnostic responsibilities.
Essential Job Functions
Perform preventive maintenance of commercial HVAC, electrical, boiler and cooling tower systems; diagnose, replace or repair components; check refrigerant levels and change filters.
Schedule and conduct routine inspections of fire suppression, sprinklers, alarms, access control and security systems.
Recommend equipment replacement.
Maintain records of supplies, parts and materials used.
Assist with general maintenance of City buildings, including plumbing, HVAC, energy management, fire alarm, sprinkler and emergency generator systems.
Analyze energy management systems to ensure optimal facility performance and conduct periodic energy audits.
Complete preventive maintenance and minor repairs of energy, fire alarm and lighting control systems.
Order and maintain inventory of spare parts and supplies.
Maintain EPA records for refrigerant transfer.
Obtain competitive quotes for contract services; coordinate vendor repairs and oversee compliance with building codes, OSHA and other regulations.
Provide on‑the‑job training to other employees in support system repairs.
Maintain regular attendance and consistent work schedule.
Temporary Duties

Proficiency in simple math, effective communication, light truck driving, blueprint reading, safety practice and equipment troubleshooting.
Education High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience Five (5) years of progressively responsible repair and maintenance of commercial HVAC or electrical distribution systems; one (1) or more years of supervisory experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
Texas Class C driver’s license (obtain within 30 days of hire).
