Join Our Team as an Accountant – King William County Government Are you a detail-oriented and motivated accounting professional looking to make a meaningful impact in your community? King William County is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Accountant to join our Finance Department. This position plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of the County’s financial operations. The ideal candidate will have experience in governmental accounting, strong analytical skills, and a commitment to public service.

Responsibilities

Prepare routine to complex financial reports and statements; assist with budget development, monitoring, and reporting; perform research, analysis and interpretation of financial information; make efficiency recommendations; and perform audits as appropriate. Review, monitor, and analyze payroll and/or accounts such as receivables, payables and fixed assets for accuracy; verify account codes, transaction amounts and other related data. Process expenditure and revenue transfer requests and prepare journal entries to revenue and expenditures in general ledger and subsidiary accounts.

Reconcile general ledger account balances with the county's systems; research financial records and make appropriation transfers; prepare journal vouchers as appropriate.

Responsible for the review of grant agreements received from multiple federal and state agencies; monitor the grant contract, program income and financial affairs for compliance and conformity. Monitor grant expenditures and revenues and ensure compliance with prescribed grantor requirements and make efficiency recommendations.

Prepare various financial reports, statements and cash flow reports; statement of financial condition; capital asset values and depreciation; capital project report on expenditures; depreciation schedule and balance sheets as required to comply with local, state and federal regulations throughout the year.

Assist in the development and updating of accounting systems and prepare specialized financial reports and statements as needed; may assist in the research, analysis and development of annual budget data; and provide assistance to internal and external auditors in auditing financial statements and records.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge

Accounting

– Knowledge of accounting principles and practices to include grant account administration. Considerable knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Customer Service

– Considerable knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This includes setting and meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

Computer Skills

– Utilizes a personal computer with word processing, spreadsheet, and related software to effectively complete a variety of financial tasks with reasonable speed and accuracy.

Interpersonal Relationships

– Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees at all levels, accounting representatives from all departments, and outside agencies. Effectively responds to and resolves difficult inquiries and disputes.

Time Management

– Plans and organizes daily work routine. Estimates expected time of completion of elements of work and establishes a personal schedule accordingly. Implements work activities in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules.

Required Abilities

Financial Management

– Ability to perform difficult arithmetic, algebraic, and statistical applications to perform financial transactions. Ability to employ accounting principles and practices in the analysis and reporting of financial data.

Communication

– Ability to effectively communicate ideas and proposals verbally and in writing, to include the preparation of detailed reports which include numerical information and statistics. Ability to handle a variety of financial issues with tact and diplomacy and in a confidential manner. Ability to listen and understand information and ideas being presented verbally and in writing.

Qualifications Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Management, Finance or a related field with course work equivalent to a major concentration in accounting or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 3-5 years of experience in accounting is preferred. Prior experience working in local government is preferred.

An acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
