This position is for individuals with no trades experience willing to complete a two‑week unpaid training program in the Marine Painter trade or for those with a related trades certificate. Newport News Shipbuilding partners with the Virginia Ship Repair Association, local community colleges and maritime training facilities to offer Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs. The Painter Trainee program is offered at Tidewater Community College (Portsmouth, VA) and consists of 80 hours of instruction, Monday‑Friday from 7:00 am – 3:30 pm. Successful completion may allow a waiver for the training program if a candidate holds a certificate or diploma in Marine Painting or a related field. Responsibilities
Learn and apply SSPC* SP‑1, SP‑2, SP‑3, and SP‑11 standards. Use power tools, hand tools and chemicals to clean surfaces before coating. Select appropriate marine coating systems for aircraft carriers and submarines. Prepare surfaces, mask unpainted areas, sandblast, and apply coatings. Interpret paint schedules and calculate material quantities. Perform quality inspections and ensure compliance with MIL thickness requirements. Work safely in various weather conditions, at extreme heights and in confined spaces. Must Have
Ability to complete the 2‑week unpaid program or possess a completed certificate in Marine Painting or a directly related field. Willingness to undergo a background investigation and drug screen. Pass a physical agility test and lift at least 40 pounds. Perform kneeling, squatting, crawling, bending, stooping, and climbing daily. Perform overhead work and work at extreme heights. Ability to work outdoors year‑round and in all weather conditions. Will to work any shift, overtime, and be available for any shift. Maintain a clean shaven appearance to wear a respirator. Why HII
