U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs – physician position in psychiatry.
Summary This psychiatric position requires knowledge, skills, and expertise in psychiatry, psychopharmacology, medication management, multidisciplinary teamwork, and psychotherapy. The incumbent will provide a full range of therapeutic interventions, including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management, treatment planning, suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, and overall care of patients with psychiatric disorders.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Provide psychiatric evaluation and management for a diverse patient population (geriatric, post‑deployment combat veterans, homeless, unemployed, and those with poor family support).
Perform diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation, treatment planning, suicide risk assessment, crisis intervention, and overall care of patients with psychiatric disorders.
Ensure practice of psychiatric medicine is consistent with TJC, CARF, HIPAA, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, national statutes, medical record documentation, and mandatory continuing education.
Provide psycho‑diagnostic services, assessment, and appropriate psychotherapeutic interventions.
Serve as a mental health leader, coordinating consults, triage, and specialty clinic referrals.
Participate in team meetings and treatment planning conferences and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to coordinate comprehensive patient care.
Order diagnostic tests and consultations, discriminate between normal and abnormal findings, and make appropriate treatment decisions.
Participate in supervision and teaching of psychiatric residents, perform on‑call duties and other assigned duties.
Practice in clinical areas such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, PTSD, substance abuse, and other psychiatric disorders in the outpatient setting.

Paid Time Off: 50‑55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, optionally 5 days paid absence for CME).
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% employer contribution.
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).
Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.
Contract: No Physician Employment Contract; no significant restriction on moonlighting.
Work Schedule Monday through Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm. Split time between Delaware CBOC and Marion CBOC.
Requirements
U.S. Citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when no qualified citizen is available.
All candidates must pass an urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
Required Selective Service registration for males born after 12/31/1959.
Proficiency in written and spoken English.
Background/security investigation and pre‑employment physical examination.
Participation in seasonal influenza vaccination program.
Completion of onboarding process with acceptable identification.
Potential probationary period; comply with all application requirements.
Qualifications
United States Citizenship.
Doctor of Medicine or equivalent (allopathic or osteopathic) from an accredited institution.
Current, full and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, commonwealth or D.C.
Completed ACGME or AOA‑accredited residency in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification (or equivalent U.S. residency plus five years of U.S. practice). Additional residency types may be considered by personnel discretion.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Physical Requirements Work performed primarily in a patient care setting, requiring adequate illumination, temperature control, and ventilation.
