Physician – Inpatient Psychiatrist U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs – Chillicothe, OH

Overview Provide inpatient psychiatric services to veterans, including medication management, individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

Offer general clinical psychiatric services to inpatient veterans, including evening on‑call services.

Conduct history & physical assessments, medication reconciliation, and management, including involuntary mechanisms when necessary.

Perform daily rounding, file legal and probation requests, and participate in hearings.

Provide diagnostic evaluations, curbside/consultations, and cross‑unit coverage.

Administer clinical team management of mid‑level and other staff as appropriate.

Apply evidence‑based standards and develop new therapeutic techniques for specialized patient populations.

Treat common psychiatric diagnoses such as anxiety disorders, PTSD, major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, substance use disorders, dementia, and traumatic brain injury‑related disorders.

Participate in quality of care, peer review, and performance improvement activities as directed by leadership.

Qualifications

U.S. citizenship or eligibility under VA policy.

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent degree from an accredited program.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or D.C.

Completion of an approved residency in psychiatry (ACGME/AAO‑CME/other U.S. residency with verified practice).

Board certification or board eligibility in psychiatry (BC/BE) is required for supervisory roles.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Background/security investigation clearance.

Passing a pre‑employment physical examination and meeting the seasonal influenza vaccination requirement.

All candidates must pass a drug screening, background check, and receive a pre‑employment physical. Additional requirements include Selective Service registration for eligible males and compliance with VA licensing and continuing education standards.
