Job Summary
The Credit Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and underwriting complex credit requests for Commercial & Industrial (C&I) loans. This role requires deep expertise in assessing the financial health and operational risks of middle‑market and commercial clients across various industries. The underwriter will analyze financial statements, cash flow projections, collateral structures, and market conditions to determine credit worthiness and recommend appropriate loan structures. The position plays a critical role in maintaining the bank’s credit quality while supporting business growth and client relationships.
Duties & Responsibilities
Analyze and underwrite C&I loan requests including term loans, revolving lines of credit, and asset‑based lending.
Review and interpret financial statements, tax returns, cash flow projections, and industry data.
Prepare detailed credit approval packages and present findings to credit committees.
Collaborate with relationship managers to structure loans that meet client needs and align with the bank’s risk appetite.
Evaluate collateral adequacy and loan covenant structures.
Monitor existing loan portfolios for performance, covenant compliance, and early warning signs of credit deterioration.
Ensure all underwriting activities comply with bank policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Maintain accurate documentation and records for audit and reporting purposes.
Stay informed on industry trends, regulatory changes, and economic conditions.
Support training initiatives and knowledge sharing within the credit team.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.
Master’s degrees in Finance are preferred.
3–5 years of experience in credit underwriting, preferably in a banking or financial services environment.
Proven track record of handling complex credit transactions and large loan portfolios.
Experience with commercial, consumer, or real estate lending, depending on the bank’s focus.
Proven track record of managing large and complex credit portfolios.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong proficiency in financial statement analysis, credit scoring, and risk assessment.
Familiarity with loan origination systems, credit risk software, and financial modeling tools.
Deep understanding of credit policies, regulatory requirements (e.g., Basel III, OSFI guidelines), and lending practices.
Strong analytical and decision‑making skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
