Gardener - Urban Forestry - Public Works (3417 TEX) City and County of San Francisco

Location: San Francisco, CA

Pay Range: $78,884 – $95,992 annually

Position: Temporary Exempt, up to 36 months

Role Description Under general supervision, the Gardener will perform routine maintenance and landscaping renovation tasks to care for athletic fields, parks, playgrounds, stadiums, thoroughfares, medians, and other landscaped areas. Responsibilities include soil preparation, plant maintenance, pest and disease management, lawn care, grounds clearing, equipment operation, and general maintenance of grounds and facilities.

Important and Essential Duties

Prepares soil by rototilling, grading, spading, and fertilizing to promote plant growth and prevent drainage problems.

Maintains plants by planting, transplanting, cultivating, irrigating, and pruning.

Identifies and destroys pests and diseases on plants and/or lawn areas using Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

Maintains lawn areas by raking, edging, mowing, watering, weeding, aerating, fertilizing, and over-seeding.

Maintains grounds of athletic fields, squares, parks, playgrounds, stadiums, thoroughfares, and other landscaped areas by clearing brush and debris, sweeping, raking, cleaning litter, clearing drains, and preventing hazardous conditions.

Operates power and manual equipment such as mowers, watering equipment, and gopher traps.

Performs routine maintenance on gardening equipment and ensures they are kept in good working condition.

Performs general maintenance duties on grounds and facilities such as athletic fields, sandboxes in parks, public easements, restroom facilities, irrigation systems, and other ground and facility areas.

May be assigned to work with and/or direct the work of volunteers.

Working Conditions Work may require exposure to inclement weather, hazardous conditions (feces, urine, used syringes, etc.), driving, riding mowers, operating small utility vehicles, working in public spaces such as parks and schools, and weekend or shift work.

Special Requirements Ability to lift, drag, or move large and/or heavy plants and equipment, kneel, bend, and squat for prolonged periods. Probationary period will evaluate these abilities.

Qualifications

Three (3) years of verified experience in maintenance of landscaped areas (planting, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating, pruning, and pest control for turf or park areas).

OR Certificate of Achievement in horticulture, landscaping, gardening, or related field with two (2) years of comparable experience.

OR Associate of Arts/Science in horticulture, landscaping, gardening, or related field with eighteen (18) months of comparable experience.

OR Completion of 3,000 hours in the San Francisco Gardeners Apprenticeship Program.

Valid California driver’s license.
