As part of the Technology Deployment – Systems Integration team, we are seeking an innovative and solutions-oriented Systems Development Engineer to help develop and deliver the next generation of world‑class fulfillment systems through advanced technology. Successful candidates are natural self‑starters with prior engineering experience in the integrated automation project life cycle, including design, development, implementation, enhancement, and support.
The System Development Engineer will work cross‑functionally with Fulfillment Center Operations and product development engineers to own the development and improvement of the deployment process. Responsibilities include building relationships, capturing voice of the customer, owning deployment design, validating and testing processes through lab and field activities, and iterating solutions with internal and external partners.
Key Responsibilities
Support the installation of complex cross‑functional projects with considerable impact, spanning organizations or geographies.
Work with internal and external engineering teams to successfully deliver high‑quality cross‑functional projects that meet time, budget, maintainability, and defect goals.
Contribute to project priorities, establish milestones, and drive schedules to meet deadlines. Capture and present KPI metrics to evaluate success and failure.
Deep dive technical solutions that encompass advanced technology applications, conveyor hardware selection, material handling integration, and commissioning content.
Participate in design reviews and support execution efforts between internal teams and outside vendors, including equipment specifications, material flow, process design, and site layout.
Communicate project status, answer questions in detail, and produce clear and concise summaries for program management.
Capture and synthesize the Voice of Customer for new product introductions and leverage this information to prioritize system defects and influence triage with Product Development.
Build and maintain strong relationships with Fulfillment Center, Sort Center management, and operations teams across multiple sites, as well as Facilities, Finance, Safety, Process Engineers, and other stakeholders.
Identify process improvement initiatives to support operations, deployment, or engineering teams within a geographic node.
Develop cross‑functional knowledge of Operations and Engineering team systems, processes, procedures, and tools.
Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to generate high‑quality, cost‑effective solutions with quick turnaround.
Travel up to 75% throughout North America, varying with peak seasons.
Qualifications Basic Qualifications
Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, or Ruby.
Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems.
5+ years of control system experience, including PLC/IPC based control design, development, implementation, and support (Allen Bradley, Siemens, CODESYS).
Experience designing complex automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, or systems including robotics (FANUC, ABB, UR) and high‑speed manufacturing.
Experience with technical documentation such as flow diagrams, conveyor and equipment layouts, and installation details.
Demonstrated understanding of embedded systems development: hardware (circuit and logic designs, PLCs), software (embedded OS and programming), testing, and implementation.
Experience testing and implementing embedded software.
Experience with industrial networking and communications, including TCP/IP and Fieldbus.
Experience with 3‑phase electrical systems.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to combine controls and software engineering skills to implement solutions at the organizational or architectural level.
Master’s degree in Engineering, Operations, Business Administration, or a related STEM field.
Operations Management/Distribution Center experience.
Exposure to Six Sigma, Lean manufacturing, transportation/logistics, and/or fulfillment/distribution centers.
Direct management or responsibility for material handling, automation, or technical projects.
Proven technical leadership for engineering projects or programs.
Design and/or implementation experience with integrated automation solutions such as material handling systems, high‑speed packaging lines, or manufacturing lines.
Experience working in an Agile environment using Scrum methodology.
Knowledge of professional software engineering best practices for the full software development life cycle.
Experience developing web‑based applications using AWS services (e.g., Kinesis, DynamoDB, Lambda, AppSync, Step Functions).
