As a result of growth, our Technology Deployment - Systems Integration team is seeking a Systems Development Engineer to help develop and deliver the next generation of world-class fulfillment systems using advanced technology. Successful candidates are self-starters with experience in the integrated automation project life cycle, including design, development, implementation, enhancement, and provision.

System Development Engineers (SysDEs) will be part of a new product/technology development cycle and are accountable for delivering equipment for testing and evaluation. You will serve as a liaison between Fulfillment Center Operations (the customer) and product development engineers.

This role requires building relationships across a cross-functional team and capturing the Voice of the Customer. Your primary goal is to own the development and improvement of the deployment process, validating and testing processes through lab and field activities. You will integrate, deploy, and troubleshoot solutions for new advanced technology systems, iterating and providing feedback to internal and external partners.

As a working leader, you will take point on implementing and delivering complex system designs and advanced technology in ambiguous problem spaces. You will integrate systems for safety, security, stability, and efficiency, participating in the full system development life cycle, including test plan execution and ensuring solution quality.

Key responsibilities The following roles and responsibilities are required for a successful Systems Development Engineer:

Support the installation of complex cross-functional projects with significant impact. Projects may span organizations or geographies in support of business goals.

Collaborate with internal and external engineering teams to deliver cross-functional projects of high quality (on-time, on-budget, maintainable, low defects).

Contribute to project priorities, establish milestones, and drive schedules to meet deadlines. Establish and present KPI metrics to evaluate project success or failure.

Deep-dive into technical solutions involving advanced technology applications, conveyor hardware selection, material handling integration, and commissioning expectations.

Participate in design reviews and support execution between internal teams and external vendors, including equipment specifications, material flow, process design, and site layout.

Communicate project status and provide clear, concise summaries to the program management team.

Capture and synthesize the Voice of Customer (VoC) for new product introductions and prioritize system defects to influence triage with Product Development teams, applying lessons learned to enable deployment at scale.

Build strong working relationships with Fulfillment Center/Sort Center management and operations teams across multiple sites, as well as Facilities, Finance, Safety, Process Engineers, and other stakeholders.

Identify process improvement initiatives in support of operations, deployment, or engineering teams within a geographic node.

Develop cross-functional knowledge of Operations and Engineering systems, processes, procedures, and tools.

Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to generate high-quality, cost-effective solutions with quick turnaround.

Travel up to 75% throughout North America, which may vary by peak seasons.

Qualifications

Experience programming with at least one modern language (e.g., C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby)

Experience with Linux/Unix

5+ years control system experience including PLC/IPC-based controls design, development, implementation, and support (e.g., Allen Bradley, Siemens, CODESYS)

Experience with the design of complex automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, or systems including robotics (FANUC, ABB, UR) and high-speed manufacturing

Experience with technical documentation such as flow diagrams, conveyor/equipment layouts, and installation details

Understanding of life-cycle embedded systems development (hardware, software, testing, implementation)

Experience in testing and implementing software (embedded OS and programming)

Experience in industrial networking and communications (TCP/IP, Fieldbus)

Experience with 3-phase electrical systems

Ability to combine controls and software engineering skills to implement solutions at organizational or architectural levels

Master’s degree in Engineering, Operations, Business Administration, or related STEM field

Operations Management / Distribution Center experience

Exposure to Six Sigma, Lean manufacturing, transportation/logistics, and/or fulfillment/distribution centers

Direct management or responsibility for material handling, automation, or technical projects

Proven technical leadership for engineering projects or programs

Experience with integrated automation solutions (material handling, high-speed packaging, manufacturing lines)

Experience working in an Agile environment using Scrum

Knowledge of software engineering best practices for full SDLC, including coding standards, architectures, code reviews, source control, and deployment

Experience developing web-based applications using AWS services (e.g., Kinesis, DynamoDB, Lambda, AppSync, Step Functions)

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across US geographies. Base pay ranges from $116,300/year to $201,200/year, depending on location and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company; depending on the position, equity, sign-on, and other compensation may be provided in addition to a full benefits package.
