MISSION

JOB PURPOSE Under limited supervision, assists in providing general supervision, guidance, and instruction to youth in a community-based program setting.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead Counselor supports the Pines Program Coordinator by assisting in interviewing potential students, conducting orientation for new students, and ensuring individualized plans have been created for youth by other Counselors.
Facilitates group sessions in a manner the youth can comprehend to utilize the materials and make life‑changing decisions while assisting the co‑facilitator to build skills through the co‑facilitation process.
Uses case management skills to create and implement individualized plans that encourage engagement, reduce absenteeism and improve retention.
Monitors and enforces attendance protocols for assigned youth.
Leads and guides other Counselors in the absence of the Program Coordinator.
Provides guidance and support when completing weekly summaries.
Leads and provides structure to youth to promote safety and consistency for all enrolled in the center.
Provides quality documentation to support the activities with little to no editing.
Tracks and maintains assigned youths’ educational progress to include G.E.D. or diploma track.
Provides resources for education, job/career readiness, transportation, financial literacy, appropriate hygiene skills, etc.
Reviews and completes volunteer log by the 5th of each month.
Completes transportation logs by the due date of each month.
Ensures the youth’s safety needs are met within the facility.
Completes thoroughly written weekly summary reports of assigned youth.
Maintains professional communication with the youth’s guardian/parent regarding successes, challenges, and needs.
Uses community outreach skills to secure community service sites for youth with obligations.
Enrolls appropriate youth in the agency’s Earn & Return program.
Cultivates working relationships with community service providers, educational partners, workforce agencies, and internal SCDJJ areas to support wraparound services for youth.
Supports the student by teaching skills, role modelling, and redirecting negative behaviours.
Enhances independent living skills by accompanying students to purchase groceries, preparing/cooking meals, and completing assigned chores.
Promotes social engagement by modelling appropriate behaviours during external opportunities and recreational activities.
Facilitates ideas for the environment and works independently to ensure daily schedules are met timely and efficiently.
Maintains programming ensuring the schedule is adhered to in a timely manner.
Performs other related job duties as assigned.
STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
A high school diploma and relevant human service experience or social service experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires considerable knowledge of state laws, community‑based programming, and the ability to exercise good judgment and initiative in a variety of situations.
Must effectively communicate with youthful offenders, department personnel, and the general public.
Demonstrated skills in First Aid, CPR, and Fire Safety Procedures.
Knowledge of trauma‑informed prevention and management of aggressive behaviour.
Must complete the required Basic Training Program of the Agency.
Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Required to perform duties related to custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Position may involve indirect contact with youth and requires training.
Flexible hours for coverage, including some evenings/days.
PREFERRED AGENCY REQUIREMENTS
Experience in various methods of instructing, handling, and supervising youth in a variety of activities.
